The Robert W. Woodruff Library invites undergraduates to submit a research project for consideration for the 2013 Undergraduate Research Awards!

The Undergraduate Research Award recognizes and rewards Emory College undergraduate students who make extensive use of Woodruff Library’s collections and research resources in their original scholarship while simultaneously showing evidence of critical analysis in their research skills. There will be up to three awards of $500 made this year, and at least one will be made to a first-year student.

To be eligible, research projects must have been completed since March 1, 2012. So many projects from Spring 2012 and all of those from Fall 2012 can be included. Projects in all media are encouraged.

In addition to the final version of the research project, students will submit a short (500-750 word) essay describing their research strategies, an abstract of the project, and a bibliography of sources used. Finally, there must be a letter of support from the faculty member who supervised the project.

The due date for all of these materials is 5pm on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. But don't let that let you procrastinate on the process.

Benezit Dictionary of Artists via Oxford Art Online platform  (http://libcat1.cc.emory.edu:32888/DB=zvda)

Benezit’s Dictionary of Artists (Woodruff Library Reference N40 .B46 2006), a great resource for finding obscure artists, has been transformed into an online database.   In addition to biographical information, entries include images of artists' signatures, monograms, and stamps, as well as bibliographies, gallery/museum holdings and auction records with prices.  Cross-search with other Oxford Art Online resources, such as Grove Art Online, The Oxford Companion to Western Art, Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, and The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms.

Searching JSTOR’s 19th Century British Pamphlets

19th Century British Pamphlets is a collection of over 25,000 pamphlets, containing a total of 990,000 pages. According to JSTOR, it represents the “most significant British pamphlets from the 19th century held in UK research libraries.” These pamphlets are an important primary source for British history, covering such topics as politics, health, women’s rights, imperialism and the abolition of slavery, but they also provide valuable insight into philosophical and theological issues of the day.

Improvements to library search tools

On Monday, October 10, 2011, Emory Libraries will begin the second phase of upgrades to discoverE. The improvements will better integrate discoverE, EUCLID, and other holdings to provide a more seamless interface to the richness of Emory’s resources, while replacing our 17-year-old back-end library automation system. The upgrades also will allow future growth in library capabilities and holdings.

After the upgrades, you will notice only a few changes in discoverE– primarily, it will search faster, provide access to a broader range of resources, and direct you more efficiently to what you need. There will be no changes to interlibrary loan, ReservesDirect, or your ability to use proxies for item checkout. Your library account and borrowing privileges will remain unchanged. EUCLID will show a more dramatic change as we bring it in line with the enhanced functionality of the new system.

Please see this flyer for additional details.

As we transition to this new system, there undoubtedly will be questions and concerns about learning to navigate and use new features. Please do not hesitate to contact library staff for assistance or consult the project web page <http://web.library.emory.edu/conduct-research/discovere/search-improvements> .
