Zotero vs. EndNote

One of the key roles of the Emory Libraries is to help you get your research and writing done. And as we all learned in English 101, research requires citations. That's why the library offers workshops in two of the best citation management tools: Zotero and EndNote.

Since these tools do more or less the same thing, we are often asked which application people should use. To help answer that question, our Emerging Technologies Librarian has written a post on ProfHacker comparing the two tools. The upshot is that the tool you choose will be determined by your needs. They each have strengths:

To sum up, then, here are what Brian sees as the different strengths of the two platforms:

Zotero strengths

  • Cost
  • Collecting sources online
  • Syncing
  • Speed, editing citations
  • Sharing with others
  • Creating sources from PDFs

EndNote strengths

  • Speed, overall
  • Speed, inserting citations
  • Speed, editing citations
  • Finding full text
  • Customizability
