Serials Review Now Underway for Level 9 Project

The reduction of the stacks collection in the Woodruff Library requires moving 20,000 Linear Feet of books and journals to storage. To achieve this goal by summer 2010 library staff have focused on two areas: “no-use/low-use” books and journals where we have negotiated electronic access.  Library staff have identified those journal titles and volumes, which are now available for review.

Andrew Young and the Community Relations Commission

By Cheryl Oestreicher, Project Archivist, Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History

In 1970, Mayor Sam Massell appointed Andrew Young to chair the Atlanta Community Relations Commission (CRC), replacing Reverend Samuel Williams. Formed in 1966, the CRC served as a liaison between African-American residents and City Hall, primarily to address incidents of discrimination. As a seasoned leader in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Civil Rights Movement, Young was a natural fit for this position.

Amistad staff are pleased to announce that the guide for the Ronnie Moore Papers is available online.  Ronnie M. (1965-1973).

Gilbert & George postal sculptures

Gilbert & George are famous British visual and conceptual artists who have been working together since they met in art school in 1967. The Raymond Danowski Poetry Library contains two of their "postal sculptures," "The Limericks" from 1971 and "Pink Elephants" from 1973. As Gilbert & George conceived it a postal sculpture was a series of cards with text and image sent out to friends, galleries and collectors.

Major Library Storage Project Planned for Spring 2010

The growth of the world-renowned collections in the Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library brings with it a critical need for more space for manuscripts and an opportunity to meet that need on the central campus. A new building for MARBL collections, programs, and exhibitions is planned but will not be completed soon enough to keep up with collection growth. To bridge that gap, library leaders plan to dedicate the space on Level 9 of the Woodruff Library stack tower to MARBL. To take advantage of available funding in this fiscal year the entire project will need to be accomplished by August 31, 2010.  Questions about the project can be sent here: librarystorageproject-l@listserv.cc.emory.edu.  For specific titles being considered for storage, please go to http://web.library.emory.edu/about/collections/collection-projects/stacks-review-project
