Collaborative Resources
A joint project between the Woodruff Library and Emory University Technology Services (UTS), the Learning Commons is designed to bring together computing tools, print materials, and electronic resources with the expertise of the Library staff and the Academic community at large. The Learning Commons serves the Woodruff, Math and Science, and Chemistry libraries.

Technical Resources
Overall, the Learning Commons provides 185 PC and 59 Mac workstations, 10 HP LaserJet black and white printers, 1 HP LaserJet color printer, and 6 Ricoh business hubs able to photocopy, print, and scan (the business hub on Level 2 of the Woodruff Library is also able to send faxes).

Please see the Programs and Applications page for details about the programs available in the Learning Commons and the Printing and Scanning page for printing instructions.

In the Woodruff Library, in addition to the general use workstations, the Learning Commons has several Special Use stations located on Level 2:

  • Desktop Publishing and Digital Media zone (DPDM) consists of 4 iMac, 3 MacPro, and 3 PC workstations with Adobe CS4 Design Premium Suite installed. All 10 stations have access to lynda.com—an online training library for various applications. Please follow this link from a DPDM station to access the content of the library.
  • Data Visualization and Statistics zone (DVS) consists of 11 PC computers equipped with a wide variety of statistical and science applications.
  • There are 2 Express Service workstations on Level 2 near the Reference/Information desk that do not require a login. These workstations are equipped with Internet browsers, Microsoft Office viewers, Adobe Acrobat Reader, multimedia players, and the FirstClass and WebDrive clients. These workstations provide quick access to data and printing.  There is a 30-minute time limit at these workstations.
  • Government Documents Station is PC based and provides open access to government documents and data.
  • CD Stand Alone Station is PC based and provides access to preinstalled CD-ROM databases.
  • LibCDInstall Station is PC based and is designated for installing and using CDs found in the library stacks.

The Learning Commons also offers several group study rooms. The room on Level 2 (213) is equipped with a PC workstation connected to a SMART Board, which transforms its flat-panel display into a touch-sensitive surface, allowing touch control for computer applications and writing in digital ink. Three rooms on Level 6 (656, 664, and 665) and three rooms on Level 7 (756, 764, and 765) feature large flat-panel plasma TV screens. The rooms on Level 6 are equipped with PC workstations connected to the screens and also provide laptop connectivity. The rooms on Level 7 offer connections for laptops and currently do not have desktop workstations. Users can bring their personal laptops or benefit from the Learning Commons Laptop Loan program conducted in collaboration with the Circulation department. The program provides both Dell PC and Macbook laptops for Emory students, faculty, and staff (please see the Laptop Loans page for details). The laptops and the necessary A/V cables and adapters needed to connect the laptops to the TV screens are available for check out at the circulation desk on Level 3.

Service
We have two service desks in the Learning Commons where you can get technical assistance. These desks are staffed by a team of student assistants who provide technical support, including assistance with programs and applications. They can also help answer questions regarding Learning Commons policies and procedures, and can help you find an available computer.

Please refer to the Hours for Tech Support page for the Learning Commons student assistant's hours of availability.

In addition to asking for help in-person at one of our service desks, you can also Instant Message (IM) the Learning Commons team for assistance. Please see the Tech Help page for details about this service.

For questions or comments, please contact Alex Kyrychenko, the Learning Commons Coordinator, at akyrych@emory.edu.
