U.S. Military Intelligence Reports: France, 1919-1941  Intelligence reports on France focus on the internal and international crises in which France was involved between the two world wars. The global economic depression of the 1930's caused inflation and widespread unemployment accompanied by political unrest. During 1933 alone, five cabinets lost power. The French Communist Party grew, and several fascist organizations sprang up to challenge the government. At the same time, France was linked to Germany in troubled and constantly shifting ways. When Germany fell behind in its payment of reparations, France occupied the Ruhr Valley from 1923 to 1925. France later reduced the amount required of Germany in war reparations and entered into the Kellogg-Briand Pact. The following year, however, France began work on the Maginot Line, its fortified and ultimately fruitless line of defense against Germany. Guide available. MICFILM 4214 No
