Earl Browder papers, 1891-1975  Earl Browder was an American socialist and leader of the Communist Party USA. Browder's place in history as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the United States of America from 1929-1944 corresponds precisely to the time when the party had its greatest impact on American politics and labor. FBI file: Alger Hiss / Whittaker Chambers This file depicts the machinations of the many characters involved in a typical McCarthy-era communist witch-hunt. Trails of evidence are followed through correspondence between supposed communist party members and sympathizers, and interviews with associates of the accused. Handwriting samples are analyzed, denials and finger-pointing are rampant, and HUAC testimonies flow as a litany of "who met with whom, where and when, what was said, and most importantly, were/are you a communist?" Files of the Communist Party of the USA in the Comintern Archives The material in the collection, largely the original headquarters records of the CPUSA shipped to Moscow many decades ago, spans the period from 1912 to 1944 with the bulk in the period from 1922 to 1936. Many of the documents in this collection are unique; the records are very detailed regarding the history of the CPUSA, particularly its origins in the 1920's and the early and middle 1930's. The papers of Aaron Burr The correspondence, books, journals, and legal papers included in this collection vividly portray Burr's early years in the military, as a New York lawyer, his major role in the formation of the Jeffersonian party, and his subsequent rise to the position of Vice President of the United States. The collection also depicts his fall from power and provides valuable insight into the duel with Alexander Hamilton, which destroyed his promising career. Guide available. MICFILM 4188 No
 The Peter Force collection Force's major achievement was as an editor and collector of historical material. He published four volumes of rare pamphlets, Tracts and Other Papers, Relating Principally to the Origin, Settlement and Progress of the Colonies in North America (1834-1836). The remainder of his career he spent on his monumental work, the American Archives. Force projected a 20-volume series of primary sources of American history from the seventeenth century to 1789.  Socialist Party of America papers, 1897-1963 Records in this collection reflect the party's internal disputes, including the 1919 split, which resulted in the formation of the American Communist Party. An important segment of the material focuses on the 1950s and 1960s, when the party's momentum was aided by social unrest and the concomitant increase in civil rights activities. These were also the years when the Socialist Party of America finally received widespread attention from intellectuals and influential government leaders in President Johnson's War on Poverty.  The Thomas E. Watson papers Watson represented the growing mass of poor farmers in the South and Midwest at a time when their economic and political status was rapidly slipping in the wake of urbanization and industrialization.Watson’s early populism was an appeal to the oppressed of both races against the common foe of corporate domination. That appeal came to grief in the rising tide of racism at the end of the century, and by 1906 Watson was in the forefront of those sponsoring state legislation to ensure white supremacy. U.S. Army surveillance of dissidents, 1965-1972 In reaction to media allegations of illegal army intelligence activities during the Vietnam War, the army chief of staff formed the ACSI (Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence) Task Force in early 1971. The task force's purpose was to respond to media and congressional investigations into the army's surveillance of dissident citizens and organizations. Guide available. MICFILM 4294 No
