The exhibition features the artwork of fifteen students from Bethune Elementary School who particpated in the creative project described below. The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center founded the Family History Artbook Project (FHAP) in 1991. It is designed for students in grades 4 and 5 and is a 5-month after school program utilizing a language and visual arts curriculum to explore issues of self-esteem, family and community history.

Students research family trees, family rituals, community and school histories. University mentors help with writing assignments and encourage students to make plans to attend college.

Storytellers, artists, and community elders participate as guest speakers and workshop leaders. Each child compiles a portfolio of stories, visual materials and interviews. Together with working artist, the students develop this material into a distinctive family history artbook.
