Japanese textile artist Takaaki Yatsuyanagi creates Ai-zome or indigo dyed scrolls and tapestries which transcend the realm of traditional Japanese art. Evoking nature’s serenity and spirituality, the artist takes images of the moon, water and wind as primary motifs for his work. Along with partner Yasuyuki Tamuri the artists founded their own studio “Torimino Sanbo” in 1992 in Akita. Tamura creates Yakishime pottery, a high temperature unglazed stoneware with a patina of earth colors. Exhibited together, Yatsuyanagi’s textiles and Tamura’s pottery complement each other in keeping with the concept of “Harmony with Nature.”
