On-going Initiative
This is the third year of an on-going initiative to migrate to e-only formats of journals that we currently purchase in print and electronically. This migration effort developed out of several concerns the Emory libraries face: the crisis that our Emory Libraries face in providing space for housing print collections; the high cost of maintaining print subscriptions (from processing to the amortization of a library building); and the preference of our users (especially in the sciences and many of the social sciences) for eJournals over print. In 2008 we are continuing this review, focusing on journal titles published by Nature, Project Muse, and - new this year - Springer Publishing's eBook series.

A Systematic Review
Emory librarians have begun a systematic review of approximately 300 journal titles and approximately 35 eBook series offered by these publishers to determine the appropriate format for these titles. Before we consider a title for e-only format, several conditions must be met, ranging from assurances that the content online meets or exceeds that in print, to archival rights which grant perpetual access to the volumes/years subscribed. In making recommendations library staff also have taken into consideration the usage of the journal or book (both in print and electronic formats) and the usability of the content.

We welcome your review; please submit comments and suggestions using this contact us link by Monday, April 28th .  Your comments will be forwarded both to the appropriate subject librarian and to the Moving Beyond Paper Working Group. The list of titles recommended for e-only format will be sent to publishers by May 15th, 2008; print copies of these journals will no longer be received beginning January 2009. Book series that are approved for e-only also will be switched to electronic format beginning in January 2009.

Our recommendations are posted under e-only titles.
