Emory University’s Robert W. Woodruff Library will close its surrounding plaza effective Monday, June 2, as renovation of its Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library (MARBL) begins with work on the wraparound balcony on level 10. Starting Monday, June 9, loading dock access will be limited to essential deliveries and construction traffic only.
The work on the top floor of the stack tower will include removing MARBL’s current exterior windows; the balcony deck, which involves multiple layers of concrete and asphalt; and the concrete half-height wall and railing around the balcony. Removal of debris at this stage will be conducted outside of the library. Once demolition is complete, the exterior construction phase will continue with deliveries of major structural components and the installation of new windows.
The plaza surrounding the building will be off-limits until at least September to protect staff and other pedestrian traffic from the active construction site. Library staff members are asked to use the front entrance only.
Regular deliveries at the loading dock will continue, along with renovation and construction deliveries, and special deliveries for catering, the Schatten Gallery and library events. Special requests for loading dock access should be directed to the library security office by calling 404-727-2960 or emailing library security manager Terence Jefferson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Library drop off and pickup for staff, visitors or guests, will be available behind the Carlos Museum, 571 S. Kilgo Circle. Please note Kilgo Circle is one way, accessible from the Dowman Drive traffic circle.
University faculty, staff and visitors who park in the Fishburne deck are reminded that they will not be able to use the library’s plaza, and are asked instead to use the Mizell bridge or Asbury Circle when walking to and from the deck.

MARBL’s major renovation is planned for completion in fall 2015. To follow the progress, please see the MARBL renovation page.
