Brittle Books Reformatting
The Preservation Office's Reformatting Unit is responsible for
creating replacements or surrogates of books too brittle to repair.
Subject liaisons, selectors and bibliographers make the decision
to replace an item with a preservation photocopy, microfilm or digital
reproduction.
Preservation photocopies aim to create a near facsimile of the original
item by maintaining page registration, reproducing halftone, continuous
tone and color illustrations, and copying endsheets if they include
vital information.
Preservation microfilming preserves the intellectual content of
brittle or rare materials. The Emory University Libraries have participated
in many grant funded microfilming projects. Preservation microfilm
allows for practical interlibrary loan of rare or unique Emory Libraries
materials to other libraries.
The Reformatting Unit also creates digital reproductions of library
materials.
