Solo Vocal Music

Use various approaches to find a song, aria or other vocal piece.

Look for:

  • a collection of songs by the composer

Example:  for the score of a song by Hugo Wolf, use this search:

  • the title of the song cycle or other larger work which contains the piece

Example: for the score of Wolf's "Ganymed," search for "Mörike-Lieder." (Omit diacritics and hyphens.)

  • the title of the piece itself.

This approach may not work for a score, because the library doesn't collect much sheet music containing only single songs.  It may work well for a CD, but remember that you might be able to find additional recordings of the same song by trying various types of searches.

  • the complete works of the composer.

The library holds complete works of many composers.  Most of these sets are in the M3 call number.  Compositions in these volumes are in the original key and instrumentation.

To find complete works, use this type of Complex search:

Author: [composer's name]

Title:  works [Works is the uniform title used for every set of complete works.]

Itemtype: score

To figure out which volume of the complete works contains your song, look at the composer's works list in Grove Music Online.

  • anthologies that may contain your song.

Browsing in the stacks may be a good approach for these.  Try these call numbers:

M1495

M1619

M1630s—for popular songs

Connect to EUCLID

Operas and other Dramatic Works

Search using the Uniform Title of the work—the original title in the original language. Omit any initial article, especially if the title's not in English. If you're not sure what the uniform title is, just use the title you know: the EUCLID record you find will help you identify the uniform title.

IIf you want a piano-vocal score, rather than the full orchestral score, look for the words "Vocal score" in the uniform title.  If the lyrics are in more than one language, the uniform title will indicate which ones.

Example:  Verdi's Masked Ball  is cataloged as

Author/Comp/Perf: Verdi, Giuseppe, 1813-1901.
Uniform title: [Ballo in maschera. Vocal score. English & Italian]

WorldCat

WorldCat provides access to the catalog of OCLC (Online Computer Library Center), a library union catalog of over 28 million records representing the combined holdings of over 11,000 libraries in the United States and abroad. As a library catalog, WorldCat contains records for the same types of materials as EUCLID. Note: Individual member libraries may have items that are not represented in the database.

To obtain these materials, use Interlibrary Loan (Ask the Music Librarian if you need assistance.)

OR

Borrow from other libraries in the Atlanta area:

Georgia State University, Georgia Tech, and the University of Georgia (Athens)

Use your Emorycard to borrow materials from these libraries. You will need to register at the circulation desk of the lending library in order to set up your account.

Other Academic Libraries in Atlanta

Most of the other colleges and universities in the metropolitan area grant borrowing privileges for a limited time upon presentation of an Interlibrary Use card from Emory. (Do not confuse with Interlibrary Loan.) Obtain your Interlibrary Use card at the main Reference/Information desk in Woodruff Library before visiting the other institution.

To find an individual library's catalog on the web, consult the Local and National Catalogs page.

AND/OR

Ask the Music Librarian to purchase the work.

Contact Joyce Clinkscales at libjm01@emory.edu.  Please include this information:

  • whatever information you have about the work (composer, title, publisher, etc.)

The print version of Music Index (Musicmedia REF ML 118 .M84) goes back to 1949.

Search Tips

Do not use any punctuation other than quotation marks in searches. It may cause a null result.

Use quotation marks to indicate exact phrases.

$ may be used as a truncation symbol or to replace any number of characters in a term.

        In Expert Search

To find citations about a person, search the name as a Subject.

To find citations about a composition, search the work's title as a Title.

If you leave the Word Form Options set to Boolean (the default), all forms of the search term will be retrieved. E.g., a search on sing will include results also for sings, sang, singer, and singing.

With the Boolean option mentioned above, you may use operators (such as and, or, not) in your search.

Indexes articles from more than 430 music periodicals from about 20 countries, and selectively indexes some newspapers. Coverage begins with 1996 except for selected journals which are indexed in their entirety. Abstracts are provided for articles published after 1995.
