Introduction

 
  • International Relations focuses primarily on the political and economic relations between/among states in the international system. Specific areas of study within the subdiscipline include international organizations, international conflict, ethnic conflict, international law, trade, diplomacy, and foreign policy.               Short guide to basic international relations terminology.

  • American Foreign Relations since 1600: A Guide to the Literature
    Reference Z6465.U5 G84 2003
    Two-volume set published by the Society of Historians for American Foreign Relations. Provides excellent annotated bibliographies for major events in American foreign relations. First chapter provides a wonderful overview of available resources in general foreign relations. Great place to start. Rest of volumes organized by time period and foreign policy event/focus.
  • Greenwood Encyclopedia of International Relations

  • International Relations: A Political Dictionary

  • Worldwide Political Science Abstracts (1967-present)
    Supplies up-to-date bibliographic information and research within the political science discipline and its complementary fields, including international relations, law, and public administration/policy.
  • PAIS International
    Includes bibliographic records from the literature of public policy, social policy and the social sciences. Types of publications indexed include books, periodicals and selected local, state, national and international government documents.  NOTE: You can search this database at the same time as Worldwide Political Science Abstracts.
  • Social Sciences Abstracts (1983-present)
    Indexes core periodicals in the fields of anthropology, economics, geography, law and criminology, political science, social work, sociology, and international relations. Print edition is available at: Reference AI3 .I53 (1974-date).
  • Web of Science
    A collection of multidisciplinary citation databases. . Because the information stored about each article includes the article's cited reference list (i.e., its bibliography), you can also search for articles that cite a known author or work.  Be sure to declick on the sciences and arts and humanities sections so that you can focus just on the social science articles.

  • CIAO (Columbia International Affairs Online) (1991-present)
    Publishes a wide range of scholarship, dating from 1991 forward, that includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, and proceedings from conferences. Database is searchable on several fields. There is also a listing of policy briefs, working papers, etc. by policy institute or organization. New material is added to each section of CIAO on a regular basis. Working papers are augmented every month, as are conference proceedings, policy briefs and economic indicators. Many of the major institutes catalogued and indexed in CIAO also have their own websites with significant text and archive material on various regions and issues:

Ethnic Conflict and Human Rights

  • Nationalism Project at the University of Wisconsion--Madison
    This is an excellent bibliographic source for articles, essays, and the like concerning nationalism and ethnicity. There are also numerous articles and essays.
  • Amnesty International
    International movement that advances the cause of human rights. Included here are the full-text of recent documents (2001), Annual Reports (1998-present), information related to campaigns, and links. A search engine is also available.
  • Human Rights Watch
    "The largest human rights organization based in the United States, Human Rights Watch researchers conduct fact-finding investigations into hiuman rights abuses in all regions of the world. Information is provided on countries and global issues, mainly in full-text format, in the form of publications, campaigns, news releases, and commentary.

Political Economy

  • SourceOECD
    SourceOECD is an online service that provides full-text access to OECD studies, periodicals, and statistics (1960 forward). Included are annuals, outlooks, policy reviews, conference proceedings, analytical reports, guidelines, working papers, all periodicals, and 27 statistical databases.
  • GATT Digital Library
    Electronic library housed at Stanford. Provides access to documents of, and information about, the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT), a treaty that preceded the World Trade Organization (WTO) and which promoted international commerce and the reduction of trade barriers among its contracting parties from 1947-1994. Registration (free) is necessary to view full-text of documents.
  • Nouriel Roubini's Global Macroeconomic and Financial Policy Site
    Impressive site with numerous links to resources on international political economy.
  • International Monetary Foundation
    Great source of data and reports on various issues of political economy.
  • World Bank
    As the largest provider of development assistance, the World Bank gives loans, counsel, and other services to over 100 developing or transitional countries.
  • World Trade Organization
    Deals with international global trade rules.
