CRL CATALOG (Center for Research Libraries) : A collection of over 600,000 searchable titles from a consortium of North American universities, research institutions, and colleges.  

GPO MONTHLY CATALOG: An index to print and electronic U.S. government documents published by the U.S. Government Printing Office on a wide range of subjects from federal agencies.  Dates 1976 to present.

EUCLID:    Use to locate current holding information about library materials in Emory libraries, this includes books, journals, videos, government documents, microfilm collections and other materials.

WORLDCAT: A worldwide union catalog created and maintained collectively by more than 9,000 member institutions includes 52 million records. Contains citations for books, journals, manuscripts, maps, music scores, sound recordings, films, computer files, newspapers, slides, and videotapes.

LOCATE SCHOLARLY ARTICLES

 

Academic Search Complete: Scholarly, multi-discipline, full text database designed, indexes over 4300 periodicals and contains full text for over 3400 scholarly publications. Coverage: Varies.

African American Biographical Database: AABD includes profiles and full-text sketches providing both biographical detail and narratives chronicling the lives of Black Americans. The majority of the content comes from Black Biographical Dictionaries 1790-1950.   Coverage: 1750-1950.

America History & Life: A bibliographic database containing citations to articles on the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present.

Coverage: 1964- present.

Anthropology Plus: Brings together into one resource Anthropological Literature and Anthropological Index. Indexes journals, books, and essays on anthropology and archaeology, including art history, demography, economics, psychology, and religious studies. Coverage is international, with emphasis on material published in English and other European languages. Coverage: Late 19th Century to present

Arts & Humanities Index: Indexes the leading arts and humanities journals. Providing cover of over 1,300 articles, bibliographies, editorials, letters and reviews. Dates: 1980 – present.

ATLA Religion Database: Indexes journals, essays in multi-author works, and book reviews in the areas of religion and theology. Coverage: 1949 - present

Biography Resource Center: A comprehensive database of biographical information on more than one million people throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas.

Black Studies Center: Unique database combining the Chicago Defender (1910-1975), International Index to Black Periodicals, Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, Black Literature Index 1827-1940. This database includes full text historical backfiles to the Chicago Defender, video clips, photographs and scholarly articles. 

Dissertation Abstracts: Covers dissertations accepted at accredited U.S. institutions since 1861. It selectively covers master's theses, Canadian dissertations, British, and other international dissertations. Abstracts are included for dissertations beginning July 1980 and for master's theses beginning spring 1988. For dissertations done in 1997 and later, PDF's of some titles are available. For dissertations and theses completed prior to those dates, references are given to the print edition of Dissertation Abstracts, American Doctoral Dissertations and Masters Abstracts. Abstracts may be consulted in those publications. Coverage: 1861-present

ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center): This database is a national information system designed to provide access to education literature.  Established in 1966 by the U.S. Department Education, Institute of Education Sciences and the National Library of Education.  Contains more than 1,000,000 abstracts of documents and journal articles on education research and practices. Coverage: 1966-present.

Historical Abstracts: A bibliographic database containing citations to articles on the history of the world from 1450 to the present (excluding the United States and Canada, which are covered in America: History and Life). Published since 1954, Historical Abstracts currently indexes over 2,000 journals published throughout the world. Coverage: 1450- present.

International Index to Black Periodicals Full Text: Covers cultural, economic, historical, religious, social, and political issues of vital importance to the Black Studies discipline. Full-text coverage of over 40 core Black Studies periodical. Coverage: Varies

International Music Periodicals: Indexes current international music periodicals and retrospective citations from periodicals dating back as far as 1874. Coverage: 1874-present.


JSTOR: Full-text searchable database of articles from an archival collection of journals in a wide range of subject areas taken from the titles, abstracts and/or full-text. Searches may be limited to a specific subject category of journals. Coverage: Varies

**Kaiser Index to Black Resources, 1948-1986: Created by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture; lists more than 170,000 citations drawn from over 150 significant and influential journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, pamphlets and reports relevant to the African American experience and the African Diaspora. Dates: 1948-1986. REF Z1361 .N39 K34 5 vols.

MLA International Bibliography: International coverage of literature, languages, linguistics, and folklore indexed from over 4,000 journals, series, books, essay collections, working papers, proceedings, dissertations, and bibliographies. Dates: 1963-present.

Periodicals Index: Indexes complete runs of journals, some right back to 1770. Its coverage is broad: every area of the humanities and social sciences with an international scope. Coverage: 1665-1996 (Varies)

PsycInfo: Indexes international literature in psychology, the behavioral sciences, and related disciplines from over 1,400 professional journals, book chapters, books, reports, and dissertations. Dates: 1806- present.

Reader’s Guide Retrospective : A database containing comprehensive indexing of the most popular general-interest periodicals published in the United States. Coverage: 1890 - 1982

Sociological Abstracts:  Primary resource for accessing the latest research in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. This database indexes information from an international selection of over 2,600 journals and other serial publications, books and dissertations. Coverage: 1952 - present.

 Women Studies International: Covers the core disciplines in Women’s Studies to the latest scholarship in feminist research. Supports curriculum development in the areas of sociology, history, political science & economy, public policy, international relations, arts & humanities, business and education. Nearly 800 sources include: journals, newspapers, newsletters, bulletins, books, book chapters, proceedings, reports, theses, dissertations, NGO studies, important websites & web documents, and grey literature. Coverage: 1972 - present.

 Worldwide Political Science Abstracts:  Indexes international serial literature in political science and its complementary fields including international relations, law, and public administration/policy. Replaces ABC Pol Sci. Also includes the backfiles from Political Science Abstracts. Coverage: 1975 - present.

Accessible ArchivesIncludes the full text of the following 19th century African American newspapers: Freedom's Journal, Coloured American, North Star, National Era, Provincial Freeman, Frederick Douglass Paper, and the Christian Recorder.

Early American Newspapers Digital
Currently provides full text access to six early American newspapers. When complete, this database will cover hundreds of newspapers from 1690 to 1820. Dates: 1750-1839.

Ethnic NewsWatch
A full-text collection of newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press, published in English and Spanish.  Dates: 1990-present.

LexisNexis Academic
Provides searchable access to the full text of national and regional newspapers, including recent years of the New York Times, Washington Post, and the Christian Science Monitor; wire services; broadcast transcripts; and international news.

PRIMARY RESOURCES

LOCATE REPOSITORIES & COLLECTIONS

   

Primary sources are the firsthand accounts by participants and observers in the events or time periods being investigated. Primary sources include diaries, letters, family records, statistics, speeches, interviews, autobiographies, film, government documents, or research studies published in scholarly journals. You can find many primary source materials via EUCLID. See the "Finding Primary Sources via EUCLID" section of this guide for tips on how to restrict a EUCLID search to find primary sources.

The Manuscript, Archives & Rare Book Library (MARBL) (marbl@emory.edu, 727-6887) of the Woodruff Library is open to all researchers, including Emory undergraduates. Special Collections houses many primary source materials, including rare books, manuscript collections (correspondence, diaries, journals, speeches, photographs, audiovisual and electronic materials, etc.), and organizational records (meeting minutes, financial records, ledger, etc.), as well as other unpublished and published materials. Subject guides listing Special Collections materials are available for African American History and Culture, Civil Rights, African American Literature, and other selected subject areas.

    Search results in RLIN may be limited by material type of archival and mixed collections.
  • National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections
    Online access to manuscript collections throughout the country registered in the National Union Catalog of Manuscripts from the mid 1980s to the present.
  • Archives USA
    Includes all the earlier entries from the printed volumes of the National Union Catalog of Manuscripts. Regularly updated.

To link directly to web sites of other manuscript and archives repositories, use Georgia Archival Repositories or Repositories of Primary Sources (nationwide).



SEARCHING EUCLID FOR PRIMARY RESOURCES

 
  • Look for works by individuals, associations, or other groups directly involved with the topic you are researching by searching for their names as authors.
  • Look for works about an event published at the time of the event by limiting a Complex search to the pubyears surrounding the event.
  • Complex searches may be limited by location to SPECIALCOL to retrieve records for manuscript collections, rare books, and other materials housed in Manuscript, Archives & Rare Books Library.
  • Complex searches may also be limited by location to MICROFORMS to retrieve records for microform collections, which often contain valuable primary source materials.
  • Consider the following subheadings, used with your subject, to identify useful  primary source material:  autobiographies, autobiography, campaign speeches, correspondence, diaries, interviews, personal narratives, public opinion, speeches, and addresses.
