What is included in my discoverE search result?
- Resource Type — the format of the item, such as book, article, journal, etc.
- Star icon — click the Star icon next to the title to add or remove the item from your e-Shelf. A highlighted star indicates that you have already added that item to your e-Shelf.
- Title — Clicking the title displays that item’s full record.
- Author or creator
- Place of publication, publisher, and date
- Availability – the item’s current status, the library or libraries which currently own the item, and the item’s call number.
What is a full item record?Clicking on the title of any item will display the full record for that item. The full record includes:
- Details Tab – includes the title, author, subjects, publisher, creation date, format, any related titles, language, and item identifiers (such as ISBN).
- Locations/Call Number Tab – includes the location of the item, call number, description, status, barcode, item type, and request options.
- Request Tab – allows you to request physical items from select libraries.
NOTE: Requesting is not available for all items, and depends on both the item–s status and library circulation policy.
- Additional Services Tab – displays the Find It @ Emory SFX Services for the item.
How can I filter my results?
Because discoverE indexes such a vast amount of information, searches sometimes return a large number of results. To filter search results, use the facets (attributes that describe the item, including its title, author, and date of publication) listed on the far left of each search results screen.
- The facets in discoverE are dynamic, meaning that for each individual search, discoverE will generate a new set of facets based upon the characteristics of the search and the results set.
- Typically, you will be given the opportunity to refine searches by categories like resource type, topic, author/creator, library, collection, language, genre, and creation date.
- Also notice that discoverE often suggests possible new searches at the bottom of the Refine My Results area.
- Once selected, facets will appear at the top of the new search results set. Multiple facets will appear from left to right in the order in which they have been selected. Refinements to the results can be reversed at any time by clicking on the X in any facet’s display box.
What do filters mean?
There are several filters available to you to refine your results. Remember that the facets in discoverE are dynamic, meaning that – for each individual search – discoverE will generate a new set of facets based upon the characteristics of the search and the results set.
- Resource Type (filters by the format, e.g., video vs. book)
- Topic (filters by the subject classification of title; for more granular subject classifications, click on one of the topic areas)
- Author/Creator (filters by author/director/creator)
- Library (filters by the physical library that owns the material)
- Collection (filters by which items are part of a specialized collection)
- Language (filters on the language(s) of resource)
- Genre (filters on a more specific type of resource such as maps, datasets, etc)
- Creation Date (filters on the publication date; for further date breakdowns, click on a specific date range)
- Classification LCC (filters on the top-level library of congress classification for a resource; click to drill down further)
