Mass Digitization Partnership & Proposal Forms

Emory's partnership with the Kirtas BookScan System and Amazon Print-on-Demand was officially announced on June 11.  Take a look at the press release for more information.

A short video of the Kirtas machine in action has been filmed (requires QuickTime).

PLEASE NOTE: As of March 2008, the committee is no longer considering new proposals.  However, a new proposal cycle will begin later this year.

Digitization Proposal Form (For large projects)

On-Demand Proposals (For small projects, individual titles, ILL, other library holdings, etc.)

Issues of scope, identification and audience (among others) are to be handled on this form.  Liaisons are encouraged to share this form with interested faculty.

This form is used to recommend groups of bound materials for digitization using the Kirtas BookScan system.  All works must be free from copyright or other legal restrictions and must fit within the size limits imposed by the system.  A large group of materials has already been identified for digitization, and individual recommendations will be folded into that larger group.  Because we are still in the early phases of implementation, the process of approving proposed materials, retrieving and scanning them, processing and cataloging them, and making them accessible may take up to six months.

The Committee will evaluate recommendations based on the following criteria:

  • Directly supports faculty and student teaching and research.
  • Provides materials for funded library or faculty digital projects and programs
  • Adds to Emory collections through acquisition of digital copies of materials held by other repositories
  • Creates preservation copies of significant works that would be damaged through continued research use

Recommendations should be forwarded to the Mass Digitization Selection Committee (MDSC@listserv.cc.emory.edu).  The Committee will evaluate all proposals, prioritize them, and send them to the Emory Libraries Collection Development Working Group for approval.  A list of recommendations will be posted on the MDSC wiki, along with lists of approved proposals.

To assist you, several sample forms have been completed:

Yellowbacks Proposal

League of Nations Proposal

Pan-American Union Proposal
