Mac and PC computers in Woodruff

Mac and PC workstations in Woodruff Library Learning Commons

Woodruff Library Learning Commons is a predominantly Mac computing environment. Our experience is that Mac computers are more reliable and are much easier to manage. This gives us the ability to keep the workstation downtime to the minimum and translates into better quality of our services to our patrons. In addition, Mac computers can be configured as dual-boot machines giving the user a choice between Mac and Windows OS. 39 Mac computers in LC are already set up as dual-boot machines, and we would like to increase their number in the future. Finally, our statistic data shows that 95% application usage in Woodruff Learning Commons divides between non-Windows specific applications such as Internet Browsers, LearnLink, and Microsoft Office. Other popular applications – SPSS, MathWorks, STATA, R - also do not require Windows OS. A few Windows specific applications, such as ArcGIS and MAXQDA are installed on the Special Use PC computers on Level 3.
