The Emory University Libraries invites applications for a Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies Librarian to deliver a full range of library services to the students and faculty in this growing area of interdisciplinary studies. At Emory University, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers undergraduate degrees and an honors program in both language areas and a Ph.D. degree in Spanish. The Latin American & Caribbean Studies program offers an undergraduate concentration in the culture, history, and contemporary issues in Latin American and the Caribbean; the program coordinates graduate and faculty research conducted under the sponsorship of numerous departments. The History Department offers the Ph.D. in the field of Latin American history as well as an undergraduate major and honors degree.

Responsibilities:  The Librarian serves as a subject liaison for the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, the Latin American & Caribbean Studies program, and the Department of History and collaborates closely with liaisons for anthropology, political science, art history and public health to meet interdisciplinary program, collection, and service needs.  S/he proactively engages with the faculty to anticipate and meet the research and curricular needs in the interdisciplinary program areas. The liaison develops and manages collections, leads classroom instruction in the effective research use of library resources, and provides general and consultative reference services through multiple venues. The Librarian creates subject-specific content for the library’s web site and employs new technologies in instructional sessions. The Librarian fulfills responsibilities in the Collection Management Division and on the Research and Instructional Services Team, including participation in the general reference rotation. The librarian actively participates and represents the Library in professional organizations and in outreach activities.

Qualifications:  Master’s degree in library/information science and demonstrated academic strength in the relevant subject areas, gained through experience or an advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred).  Written and oral fluency in Spanish required and reading knowledge of Portuguese preferred. Requirements include experience in collection management and knowledge of current trends and issues in scholarly publishing; meeting the research needs of students and faculty in the related disciplines; developing and delivering discipline-related instructional sessions; and demonstrated capabilities with library-relevant information technology applications for reference, research, and instruction. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and proven ability to contribute in a team environment, collaborate with a wide range of colleagues, manage multiple responsibilities, and respond effectively to changing needs and priorities.  A record of active involvement in professional activities is important.
