The General Libraries of Emory University seeks a visionary and collaborative librarian to serve as Access Services Department Head. The Emory University Libraries are implementing an aggressive strategic plan to build a next-generation library with an infrastructure that supports new forms of pedagogy and new systems for the creation and dissemination of knowledge. Emory is a charter implementation site for the Primo portal software application and is planning a review with possible replacement of its integrated library management system. The Access Services Department of the General Libraries includes the Circulation and Stacks Team, the Interlibrary Loan and Reserves Team, and two branch libraries, Music and Media and Chemistry. The Emory University Libraries include the General Libraries, the O’Kelly Library at Oxford College, the MacMillian Law Library, the Pitts Theology Library and the Health Sciences Center Library.
The Access Services Department Head provides dynamic leadership, vision, planning, and assessment for the development of innovative services to facilitate access to materials needed for learning, teaching, and research. S/he actively engages with other campus administration, information technology and library service areas to develop seamless user-centered services for the Emory community. The department head serves a central leadership role in collaborating with all Emory Libraries for university-wide access services initiatives in the areas of circulation, course reserves, materials booking, and interlibrary loan/document delivery. These services are currently delivered via shared library systems including Sirsi/Dynix Unicorn, ILLiad and ReservesDirect. The position will also play a major role in the review and possible implementation of a new integrated library management system.
Key Responsibilities: The Access Services Department Head will provide leadership for the development of innovative services to facilitate access to materials needed for learning, teaching and research. S/he will:
- Set strategic direction and lead the development and coordination of access services programs in the Emory University Libraries, including circulation, course reserves, materials booking, interlibrary loan/document delivery and related functions; establish targets and measures for effectiveness of all operations;
- Lead a General Libraries’ department consisting of 4 unit/team leaders,17 access services staff, and 32,000 student hours;
- Play a key role in the review and implementation of a new library management system;
- Coordinate research and development efforts that focus on incorporating innovative automation and web technologies into access services in collaboration with faculty, library units and information technology units;
- Build upon existing consortial relationships regionally and nationally to improve access to collections; and
- Participate actively in regional and national professional associations and maintain current awareness of issues and trends relating to access services.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in library/information science;
- Minimum 3 years of management experience of staff and projects, including experience leading, mentoring, and training;
- Experience with library management systems and services and developing digital library technologies;
- Proven ability to work collaboratively, initiate new services and programs, facilitate change and lead team-based decision making;
- Knowledge of current issues and trends relating to library access services and the use of technological innovations to deliver information resources in a learning and research environment;
- Strong customer service commitment and excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and
- Active involvement in professional associations.
