Humanities/History Librarian


The Emory University Libraries invites applications for a Humanities/History Librarian to deliver a full range of library services with a concentration in Medieval, Early, and Modern European History. Emory University's Medieval History program is a small, highly selective program and the Early Modern European History program is one of the History Department's best known and most successful Ph.D. programs; the Modern European History program is a small but focused program with emphasis on the twentieth century. The Humanities/History Librarian is one of two librarians serving the History Department; the other position concentrates on U.S. History.

Responsibilities: The librarian provides a full range of library services and serves as subject liaison for Early Modern and Modern European History. As subject liaison s/he articulates, anticipates, and meets the research and curricular needs in the area of concentration. S/he develops and manages collections, provides classroom instruction in the use of library resources, and provides general and consultative reference services. S/he creates subject specific content for the library's web site and employs new technologies in instructional sessions. In providing services and developing collections, the librarian collaborates with other liaisons to meet interdisciplinary needs. The librarian fulfills responsibilities in the Collection Management Division and on the Research and Instructional Services Team, including participation in the general reference rotation. The librarian represents the Library in national and regional organizations and in outreach activities.

Qualifications: Master's degree in library/information science and demonstrated academic strength in European History, gained either through experience or an advanced degree (preferred). Experience in collection management and knowledge of current trends and issues in scholarly publishing. Experience in meeting the reference and research needs of students and faculty in European history. Experience in designing and delivering discipline-specific library instruction sessions. Reading knowledge of French, German and Russian is preferred. Excellent communication skills and ability to contribute successfully in a team environment, collaborate with colleagues across the library and the university, and manage multiple responsibilities. Record of involvement in professional activities.
