Interlibrary loan service is provided to facilitate the university-related
research of Emory students, faculty, and staff. This service
is not available to spouses or children of the above groups, to
alumni, or to guest researchers, who are encouraged to contact their
primary academic, public or corporate library regarding interlibrary
loan service.

The length of time involved in obtaining a loan or photocopy from
another library can vary considerably. However, most materials are
obtained in ten days to two weeks. Materials from from within the
local ARCHE library
consortium usually are supplied in five to seven days.
Rush processing of requests can be provided on a limited basis
in cases of urgent need. If you require delivery of materials
in less than one week, please so indicate on your request(s) and
discuss your need with ILL staff prior to or immediately after submitting
your request(s).

Though we will attempt to fill almost any request submitted, the
following types of material often are difficult to obtain through
interlibrary loan:
- Recently published items
- Textbooks, study guides and workbooks
- Entire volumes or issues of periodicals, especially if less
than 3 years old
- Reference works
- Rare books and original manuscripts
- Newspapers and other bulky materials in their original format
- Audiovisual materials and computer software
- Works of genealogy or heraldry
- Dissertations and theses from outside North America
You should not expect to obtain items listed in Emory libraries'
catalogs unless they have been declared missing or lost by the appropriate
circulation department. Items that are charged out to another borrower
should be recalled for your use unless the need is urgent.

Check EUCLID and/or
other appropriate catalogs to be sure that Emory does not own the
material needed.
Please see a Reference Librarian if you have incomplete information
about material required or if you need assistance in determining
whether items are held in Emory libraries.
Requests may be submitted electronically via ILLiad and via most of the
RLIN/Eureka databases accessible from the Databases
link on the libraries' web page and/or the Databases button in EUCLID.
- To access ILLiad, click on the Interlibrary Loan link in EUCLID
or other web page.
- Enter your Emory ID.
- If you are a first-time ILLiad user, complete the registration
form.
- From the ILLiad Main Menu, select the type of request you wish
to submit.
- Complete a separate request for each item, including the following
information:
- Complete and accurate information about the item requested--please
do not use abbreviations
- Source of your citation, i.e., where information about an
item may be verified
- Date after which you cannot use the requested material
Please be sure to inform ILL staff of extended absences when requests
are outstanding and/or cancel requests for material no longer needed.

Most General
Libraries ILLiad users choose to have their ILL articles delivered
electronically in PDF format. You can indicate whether or not you
prefer electronic delivery when you register in ILLiad or by
later modifying your Electronic Delivery Preference on the
User Information page (the last button on the ILLiad Main Menu).
Once you have indicated
your preference for electronic delivery in ILLiad, you will be notified
via e-mail when requested documents are available for viewing (in
PDF format). To view an electronic document, logon to ILLiad, click
on the Electronic Documents button under Review Requests,
and click on the transaction number of the document you wish
to view.
Electronic documents
will be available via ILLiad for 30 days or until they are deleted
by the user, whichever is earlier.
Please note that, while
we can deliver most articles electronically, we still receive some
in paper format. For the time being, we will continue to notify
you to pick up these articles at your usual location. In the future,
we hope to be able to offer electronic delivery of all ILL articles,
regardless of the format in which they are supplied.
You will be notified when requested material is available for your
use. E-Mail is the primary method of notification.
For most users, the pickup location for paper copies and items
loaned via ILL is the Circulation desk on the 3rd Floor
of the Woodruff Library*. Since Circulation maintains several types
of items for pickup, please be sure to specify "interlibrary loan"
when asking for these materials.
*Faculty and graduate students in Chemistry, Environmental
Studies, Mathematics & Computer Science and Physics may choose
to have their items delivered to the Chemistry or Math/Science Center
libraries for pickup or subsequent delivery to a departmental office
or mailbox.

The General Libraries absorb most fees charged by other libraries
for supplying materials via interlibrary loan; however, you are
responsible for the cost of the following kinds of reproductions:
- Dissertations purchased from ProQuest (currently $28.00--prepayment
is required ASAP after request submission in order for your request
to be processed)
- Copies of more than 50 pages and/or requiring special processing
by the supplying library (e.g., microform or photographic reproductions)
- Copies with copyright fees in excess of $20
ILL will make every effort to advise you in advance regarding unusual
charges and/or prepayment requirements.
Users of ILL services also are responsible for prompt payment of
any fines and/or replacement costs arising from their requests (please
see the RETURNS/RECALLS section below for
further information).
Please note that any monies owed for ILL activity must be paid
at the Interlibrary Loan Office and not at the Circulation Desk.

The lending library determines the loan period and renewal policy
for its material. With the exception of materials from the Center
for Research Libraries (CRL), borrowers, including faculty,
can expect to keep most material for two to four weeks. Material
from CRL is loaned for six months, subject to recall.
Researchers should make every effort to complete their work with
ILL material within the original loan period. If a renewal request
becomes necessary, a three-week renewal may be requested via ILLiad
(not EUCILD). To place a renewal request in ILLiad, click on Checked-Out
Items, the request number of the item you wish to renew,
and Request Renewal.
Please note that renewal requests must be placed before
the original due date. ILL must contact the lending library for
permission to renew and will inform you whether or not your renewal
request has been granted. Please also note that, with the
exception of CRL material, we usually can obtain only one renewal
per item.

The lending library also establishes the conditions under which
borrowed material may be used. Items may be restricted for use in
the library only, photocopying may be prohibited, etc.
A borrower's failure to comply with the conditions of a loan
could jeopardize his or her interlibrary loan privileges and/or
those of the General Libraries with lending institutions.

Return all ILL materials directly to the Interlibrary Loan Office
or to the Circulation Desk by the date due. A fine of 50 cents
per day will be charged for ILL material that is returned more than
one day past the due date.
Please note that ILL materials are subject to recall by the lending
library at any time. Failure to return a recalled item by
the date indicated will result in a fine of $2.00 per day.
ILL fines can be paid in person at the Interlibrary Loan
Office (not the Circulation Desk) with cash or or a check payable
to Emory University. Checks can also be mailed
to the following address:

Continued failure to return ILL materials or to pay fines
in a timely manner will result in suspension of a borrower's interlibrary
loan privileges. Access to ILLiad will be blocked for requesters
with any ILL items more than 21 days overdue or with $30 or more
in unpaid ILL fines.
