Reviews of the Field

The literature of most disciplines includes journals that focus on providing reviews of new materials in the field. Locating the review journal in your particular area of study, and finding out from a librarian what index covers that review journal, can help you find book reviews. Examples of such journals include Reviews in Anthropology and Reviews in American History.

Specialized Book Review Indexes

There are several reference sources that index book reviews in a particular field. Index to Book Reviews in England, 1749-1774 indexes book reviews of poetry, fiction and drama based on the holdings of the British Library collection. Africana Book Reviews 1885-1945 indexes book reviews on this region which appear in forty-four English Language publications. Ask a librarian for assistance in locating such sources.

Subject Specific Indexes

Sometimes looking for an index in a smaller field can help you find book reviews. The Indexes to Southeast Asian Journals for example, is a guide to both journals articles and book reviews.
