About EndNote

Entering Information Into EndNote

There are three basic ways to put citation information into EndNote:

Typing By Hand

Click References menu / New. Remember to enter multiple author names on separate lines. Press Tab to move between fields.

Using Connection Files

Click Tools menu / Connect / Connect… Choose the resource to search, then enter your search terms. Use the Copy button to download references into your library, or drag and drop references from the remote window into your library.

Important: In order to search EUCLID with a connection file, you must download an updated file. Choose the EUCLID connection file for Windows or Macintosh and save to the Connections folder inside your EndNote program folder. See this PDF file for more detailed instructions.

Importing Search Results

Search the database via the web interface as you normally would. Select the references you want, then save or export them. Every database works a little differently, so check the EndNote at Emory page for instructions for a particular database.

Extracting Information From EndNote

EndNote can create independent bibliographies, or generate a bibliography to the end of your Word document from citations you insert.

Exporting Stand-Alone Bibliographies

Select the references you want to include in your bibliography, then click References menu / Show Selected References. Click File menu / Export… then choose a file name. Save as type Rich Text to create a Word- or WordPerfect-compatible file, or HTML to create a web bibliography.

Inserting References Into Word Documents

Place your cursor in your Word file exactly where you want the citation to appear. Click the Find Citations button on the EndNote toolbar in Word and enter a keyword to locate your citation, then click Insert. When finished, click the Format Bibliography button to format your citations and generate your bibliography.

Frequently Asked Questions

I can't connect to EUCLID using the connection file that came with EndNote!

The Emory connection file that ships with EndNote is out of date. In order to search EUCLID with a connection file, you must download an updated file. Choose the EUCLID connection file for Windows or Macintosh and save to the Connections folder inside your EndNote program folder.

Should I use one library for all my references, or separate libraries for different projects?

It's entirely up to you; there's no right or wrong way to organize your files. Just remember that EndNote automatically saves changes to your library file as you work, so back up your files regularly.

I already have a long bibliography that I typed in Word. Can I convert it to an EndNote library?

Unfortunately there's no way to do this automatically. The best way is to search for your references online and download them into a new library using connection files or import filters.

How do I download search results from my favorite database into EndNote?

Every database works a little differently. In general, you'll need to either use the database's direct export function, or save your search results to a text file and import it using a filter. For more details, see the EndNote at Emory download instruction page or chapter 7 of the EndNote 7 manual.

I tried using a connection file to search a database, but it asks for a password.

Remember that EndNote includes connection files for databases to which Emory doesn't subscribe, so you may not be able to connect. Check with the Emory Libraries to see if Emory subscribes to the database you want, and e-mail the EndNote-L listserv (endnote-l@listserv.cc.emory.edu) if you're still having trouble connecting.

How do I add page numbers to an in-text citation?

Right-click the formatted citation and choose "Edit Citation" from the menu. Fill in the page numbers (including spaces and punctuation) in the "Pages" field, click OK, then reformat your bibliography.

Where to Get Help

Don't get discouraged if it takes a little while to get comfortable using EndNote. With a little practice it isn't difficult, and there are many resources available for help and information.

Downloading Updates: Connection Files, Import Filters, Output Styles

A common way to correct a problem with importing or outputting citations is simply to update the connection file, filter or output style. These can be downloaded from:
