About Us

Mission Statement:

The Stacks Team serves the Emory community by providing an accessible and well-maintained print collection.

What We Do:

The ultimate goal of the Stacks Team is to have all the books on the shelves, neatly in their proper places. We strive to meet a 24-hour turnaround time, meaning that any book returned to the library will be back in the stacks in its proper place within 24 hours.

We accomplish this by following a precise, yet flexible, workflow pattern. We check the entire building for books left lying on tables and in carrels, and work with the Circulation department to get books quickly discharged and ready to send to the stacks. The materials are sorted according to the floor they're shelved on, then taken to their respective floor and ordered onto carts. From the carts, the books are shelved and the cycle begins anew.

To ensure that the materials remain neat and in order, the Stacks Team strives to shelfread the entire Stacks tower collection twice a year. Shelfreading involves checking the books one-by-one for proper call number order and straightening the shelves as we go. We also keep a close eye on the space available in each section and shift the books to make room in fast-growing sections.

Student Jobs

In the Stacks Team, we hire two types of student workers: shelvers and shifters.

Shelvers perform many tasks, from pick-ups to shelfreading to shelving books.

Shifters primarily focus on shifting the books to make space in needed areas. These workers also occassionally do other work, such as measuring and shelfreading.

We offer flexible schedules and strive to make our working environment a pleasant one.

Applications for employment can be found at the library Administration Office, on the 3rd Floor next to the Schatten Gallery. For more information on getting a job in the Stacks, please email Bran Peacock.
