Where
do I pick up my request?
You can pick up storage items from shelving located
on Level 3 in the InfoCommons area across from the
Woodruff Library Circulation Desk. This is a self-service
area. We will shelve items in call number order,
so please bring your pick-up notice so you can easily
find your materials. If you would like to check-out
the items, please bring them to the Circulation desk.
How
long will my requested material be held for me?
All requested material will arrive at Woodruff Library
within 24-hours of the request, excluding weekends.
Requested material will be held for ten days from
the time it arrives at the library. If we are unable
to locate the material for any reason, you will receive
an email notification.
How
long does it take to get a requested item?
Materials will be retrieved from the Storage Library
Mondays - Fridays. Requests placed on the weekends
(Friday, Saturday or Sunday) will be delivered to
the Woodruff Library on the following Monday. The
goal will be a 24-hour processing time (excluding
weekends). That time frame may on occasion be expanded,
based on the volume of requests.
Beginning
Friday, December 28, at Noon, Level 6 materials
with a locations
of STORTEMP will be inaccessible to both staff
and users until Tuesday, January 15, 2008,
while the materials
are being transferred back to Level 6. Level 6
will re-open to the public on Wednesday,
Jan. 16, 2008.
Do
these changes affect all the General Libraries' books
in Storage?
Yes. In order to streamline procedures for all General
Libraries materials in storage (materials from Level
6 as well as materials with a permanent location
of
Storage), the following changes are now in effect:
- We
will notify you by email either when the requested
material
is available or if an item is unavailable. Materials
should be available for pick-up 24-hours after
the request is made (except
for requests made on Fridays and Saturdays these should be available on Monday).
- All materials will be held
for 10 days and will be sent back to the Storage
Library on the 10th day.
- All storage requests will
be held for pick-up on shelving located on Level
3 in the InfoCommons area across from the Circulation/Reserves
Desk. Items will be shelved in call number order.
This is a self service area. If you would like
to
check out the materials, please bring them to the
Circulation Desk for check out.
- Please return items to the
Circulation Desk to insure that the materials
make it back to where they belong. Do not leave
them by the photocopiers or on a table.
Where
are the books?
The books and journals will be shelved in the University's
Storage
Library. The Storage Library houses materials
from all of the Emory libraries in a special climate-controlled
environment best suited for books.
Where
is the Storage Library? Can I go there and browse
through the books?
The
stacks area of the Storage Library is not open to
the public, therefore browsing is not possible. If
you need to consult
multiple volumes of books or journals, there is
a reading space at the Storage Library expressly
for this purpose, which is available by appointment.
Please contact the Retrieval Supervisor at 404-727-2830
for an appointment and directions. Also note that
photocopying services
are not available at the Storage Library.
Can
I have one of these books/journals that I have requested
sent to another library on campus to pick up there?
No. Because these books and journals are owned by
the Woodruff Library, they can only be checked out
at Woodruff Library. The EUCLID circulation system
cannot check out books at an Emory library that does
not own them.
Is
there a way to request a book/journal that is in the
Storage Library if I don't have library privileges?
Yes, iIf you do not have library privileges and
wish to request a book or bound journal volume from
the Storage Library, Circulation staff can manually
place a request for you. You can visit us on Level
3 of the Woodruff Library, or contact us by phone
at 404-727-6873. Article delivery is available for
Emory students, faculty, and staff only.
Why
change the book stacks?
With the book stacks in Woodruff Library nearing their
capacity (at almost 90% full), something needed to
be done to help alleviate the overcrowding in many
areas of the stacks. As we continue to acquire print
materials to support teaching and research at Emory,
the facility simply is running out of space.
How
long will the Level 6 be closed?
Current plans are for Level 6 to close from late
May 2007 through January 15, 2008.
What
will be gained?
- Moveable Compact Shelving
with Increased Capacity
- 3 Group Study Rooms
- New Lounge/Seating Area
- Improved Lighting &
Sprinkler System
- Carpeting & New Paint
- ADA Compliant Restroom,
Study Carrels and Studies
- Increased Electrical Outlets
- Digital Clock
Why
do this construction now?
It is essential that we increase the capacity of
the stacks as soon as possible to accommodate the
expanding
print collections which continue to be critical to
support teaching and research in many of the academic
disciplines at Emory. Although growing in importance
each year, electronic resources do not fulfill all
of Emory's research needs. This is the third phase
of a multi-year project. Level 4 was renovated in
2004 and Level 5 in 2006.
Why
not leave the floor open during construction and do
different parts of the floor at a time?
Part of the renovation requires removal of asbestos,
a hazardous material. Emory University policy is to
remove all asbestos from any campus site before any
construction or renovation.
Once all the asbestos is removed,
the construction of compact shelving, electrical
work, and painting will begin. Our safety concerns
for you,
the user, during this large-scale project have led
to the decision to close off Level 6 entirely.
Simply put, during construction Level 6 is not a desirable
environment for library patrons or the books!
How
much is this project going to cost?
The estimated cost of renovating Level 6 is about
$2.1 million, based on current steel prices.
Why
does the location in EUCLID still say STOR-TEMP and
not STORAGE?
The STOR-TEMP designation helps differentiate among
Level 6 materials which are only temporarily in Storage,
and others which are permanently housed there. When
you see a record for an item normally shelved on
Level
6, HN-KZ
and N-NX materials, next to the location
information is a Request
It button which will
link you automatically to a form to request stored
items. See more specific directions on requesting
items from Storage.
If you have questions about the project, retrieval services, your borrowing privileges,
electronic resources, or storage, please contact
us at WoodLibRenovation-L@listserv.emory.edu.
