The Stack Tower conversion
to compact shelving will increase shelving capacity
in the Woodruff Library Stack Tower in order to
keep as much of the
library's collection as possible on the central campus
and accessible to users. Renovation of Level 4
began in May
2003 and Level
5 in May 2006. Level 6 renovation began in May
2007 and will be completed in Jan. 2008. The
process takes approximately nine months for each
floor.
As more
stack floors
are renovated, the capacity of
the Stack Tower will eventually increase
by 50%. It now holds 1.8 million volumes.
New carpet, paint, and ceilings
will make each floor more inviting and comfortable.
A new lounge area near the elevator lobby will
feature
comfortable chairs and couches and views of the Baker
Woodland. New features on Level 6 also include
three group study rooms and larger consultation
spaces for the art materials shelved on that floor.
A photocopier and stand-up EUCLID terminal are
available
on each
floor.
Additional
electrical
outlets also will be installed.
Renovation includes the addition
of an ADA compliant restroom adjacent to new wheelchair
accessible open carrels and closed studies. A new
fire suppression sprinkler system will be installed
on each floor for the security of the collections
and to ensure personal safety.
The library is enthusiastic
about this cost-effective, user-centered approach
to accommodating the growth of its physical collections.
We apologize for the temporary inconvenience as
we
continue to improve services and access to collections.
