Project Overview

The Stack Tower conversion to compact shelving will increase shelving capacity in the Woodruff Library Stack Tower in order to keep as much of the library's collection as possible on the central campus and accessible to users. Since 2003, Level 4, 5 and 6 renovations have been completed. Renovation for level 7 will begin in May 2008 and will be completed in Jan. 2009. The process takes approximately nine months for each floor. As more stack floors are renovated, the capacity of the Stack Tower will eventually increase by 50%. It now holds 1.8 million volumes.

New carpet, paint, and ceilings will make each floor more inviting and comfortable. New lounge areas near the elevator lobbies will feature comfortable chairs and couches and views of the Baker Woodland. New features on Level 7 also will include three group study rooms. Additional electrical outlets also will be installed.

Renovation includes the addition of an ADA-compliant restroom adjacent to new wheelchair accessible open carrels and closed studies. A new fire suppression sprinkler system will be installed on each floor for the security of the collections and to ensure personal safety.

The library is enthusiastic about this cost-effective, user-centered approach to accommodating the growth of its physical collections. We apologize for the temporary inconvenience as we continue to improve services and access to collections.

If you have questions about the project, retrieval services, your borrowing privileges, electronic resources, or storage, please contact us at WoodLibRenovation-L@listserv.emory.edu.
