Locating Books

To find materials located at any of Emory's libraries, search EUCLID, Emory's online library catalog. To restrict a search to English (or any other language) select Complex Search and set the language box (scroll down a bit) to the language desired.

For assistance, read the handy EUCLID Search Tips .

When searching EUCLID by subject, try the Browse search mode, using Library of Congress Subject headings. This method breaks large subjects into sub-fields that help pinpoint helpful titles. If you are uncertain about specific subject headings, try a Keyword search on "Everything" using one or two words that you feel describe the topic. Look at the subject headings attached to the results of this search and Browse on them.

To locate books that other libraries own on your topic search the RLIN (Research Libraries Information Network) Bibliographic File or WorldCat Both are online catalogs containing books held by many libraries (150 libraries in RLIN, 14,000 in WorldCat). Search also the Center for Research Libraries Catalog for books and microfilm sets and their Foreign Newspapers Database for newspapers.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN
The library will borrow books for you from almost any library in the country and can supply copies of articles from almost any magazine, newspaper or journal. This is called Interlibrary Loan and you can initiate an ILL request from any EUCLID screen (third button from the right at top) or from the Interlibrary Loan System page.

You can also borrow from books directly from certain area libraries using either the GETS Program or the ARCHE Interlibrary Use Program.

Identifying Primary Source Materials

The first step in identifying primary source material is to read the bibliographies and scan the footnotes in the secondary works on your subject. Read also the preface and acknowledgments: authors often identify particularly useful works, libraries, or archives there.

Some of the types of materials you will use as primary sources are:

1. Newspaper and magazine articles written at the time of the events.
2. Autobiographies and diaries : written records of the time.
3. Records and publications of governments or governmental agencies involved in the events.

Historical Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Check the Woodruff Library newspaper list for appropriate newspapers. It is organized by country (or state) and includes a chronological index. Do not forget the Center for Research Libraries foreign newspaper collection.

The following indexes are helpful for identifying newspaper and magazine articles written during the period covered by this course:

Humanities & Social Sciences Abstracts (1907 to present)
Coverage includes a wide range of interdisciplinary fields covered in a broad array of humanities and social sciences journals. There are some foreign language titles included prior to 1965; thereafter all titles are in English.

New York Times Historical (1851-1999)
Provides the full text of every article as well as search capability by key word.

Nineteenth Century Masterfile (1800-1906)
Contains indexing from one of the few indexes to 19th century periodicals, Pooles Index to Periodical Literature. It also contains indexing from three other late 19th century indexes. Both British and American periodicals and journals are covered.

Reader's Guide Retrospective (1890-1982)
The great index to U. S. (and some British) popular and general interest magazines of the Twentieth Century. It includes news magazines

Times Digital Archive (1785-1985)
The Times of London. This database provides full-text images of each page of every issue of the Times.

Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals, 1824-1900 CD-ROM
Information Commons Non-Web Databases
Indexes the tables of contents for each issue of 43 monthly and quarterly periodical publications for the period 1824-1900. All words in titles are searchable as well as are authors names.

Autobiographies, Diaries and Source Collections

Autobiographies and diaries are, of course, listed under the name of the author but it is difficult to identify such publications by subject searching because the terms "autobiography" or "memoirs" or "diary" are not used. You may, however, browse EUCLID using the subject heading "Diaries Bibliography" or "Autobiography Bibliography" to locate lists of these.

  • Government Records and Publications

This section is quite incomplete but is offered to suggest the types of materials available in the library. To investigate collections applicable to a particular topic or country, consult your librarian.

    A. Indexes to Government Records

Indexes to British Parliamentary Papers (1801-1945)
    Beck Center CD-ROM 262
This is the best index to the Sessional Papers for the period it covers. The "Sessional Index" is based on the indexes for each session and covers the period 1801-1945 for the House of Commons and 1801-1922 for the House of Lords. The keyword capability of the "Sessional Indexes" makes it especially useful. This CD also includes a "General Subject Index" covering 1801-1899 for the House of Commons and 1801-1859 for the House of Lords. There is also an index to personal names.

The following print indexes are also useful:
General Index to the Bills, Reports, and Papers printed by order of the House of Commons and to the Reports and Papers Presented by Command, 1900-1948/49 (1960)
    Reference J301 .M3 1900-1949

Parliamentary Papers (House of Commons and Command) General Alphabetical Index... 1950-1958/59 (1963)
    Reference J301 .M3 1963

    ______________ ... 1959/60-1968/69 (1975)
    Reference J301 .M3 1959-1969

    Lexis-Nexis Congressional (1789-1969)
Indexes and identifies publications in the U.S. Serial Set (covering a wide range of topics related to specific legislative bills) and transcripts, testimony and evidence published in connection with Congressional hearings.

    B. Government Records: Great Britain

British Documents on Foreign Affairs: Reports and Documents from the Foreign Office Confidential Print Part I:1848-1914 (JX632. B74 - JX632 .B748)
    Part II:1914-1939 (JX632 .B766 - JX632 .B769)
    Part III:1940-1945 (JZ632 .B762 - JZ632 .B7694)
    Part IV: 1945-1949 (JZ632 .B77 - JX632 ,/b7795)
The "Confidential Print" was a means of distributing diplomatic dispatches and other papers among government offices and agencies. These documents were generally reports of conditions or other matters in a country or area that observers, diplomatic, military, or civilian, thought important. All of these volumes have a table of contents with two or four word descriptions of the contents of each document. Various series within each part cover different parts of the world.

British Parliamentary Papers. House of Commons Sessional Papers
    Microfiche 684 (1731-1941/42; 1979 to present)
    Microprint 8 (1931 to 1978/79)
The British House of Commons Sessional Papers consist of Bills, Reports of Committees and Commissions, and Accounts and Papers covering a wide range of political, historical and economic information. Included in the Sessional Papers are the so-called Command Papers, papers non-Parliamentary in origin but presented to Parliament "By Command" of His/Her Majesty. Usually such these papers deal with issues likely to be the subject of legislation. Often they will include government "White" or position papers and significant Royal Commission reports.

    Parliamentary Debates (Authorized Edition)
    Microfilm 3332 (1803-1908)
Government UK J301 .K22 (House of Commons) (1909 to present)
Government UK J301 .J22 (House of Lords) (1909 to present)
Known as Hansard's after an early publisher, each volume of the Parliamentary Debates has an index of speakers and subjects. From 1830 on, each session is indexed either at the end of the last volume of the session or in a separate and last volume of the session. Note that Hansard's is numbered by columns, not by pages. Also, researchers should be aware that the pages for the oral debate and the pages for the answers to written questions are numbered separately, the index placing a "w" after items listed in the written answer section.

    Documents diplomatiques français (1871-1914) 43 volumes (1929-1936)
    D397 .F73
