Woodruff Newspaper Lists

    Provides a list of newspapers available at the Woodruff Library. The main list is arranged by state or country; Title and Chronological indexes are available. Important research tip: While this list includes selected newspapers available electronically, it is limited primarily to newspapers available in print and microfilm formats

Full-Text Newspaper Databases

United States Newspapers

  • Lexis/Nexis Academic (recent years)
    Provides searchable full-text access to thousands of national, regional, and international newspapers and newswires. Includes recent years of many major domestic ana foreign newspapers. The Factiva database is a good complement to the coverage in this database.
  • Factiva (recent years)
    Provides searchable full-text access to thousands of national, international, regional and local newspapers and newswires. Includes recent years of the Wall Street Journal, and the Reuters and Dow Jones newswires. Factiva has more of a business focus than Lexis/Nexis Academic.

  • Important research tip:
    You can search simultaneously the electronic historical versions of numerous U.S. newspapers, including: Atlanta Constitution, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post--listed below--plus the American Periodicals Series Online (historical magazine) database. From the search screen in any of these databases, click on the "Databases Selected" link. Then scroll down and select any or all of the "Historical" databases, click on the "Continue" button and proceed with your search.

  • Ethnic NewsWatch (1990 to present)
    A full-text collection of more than 200 newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press, published in English and Spanish, in this country. A rich collection of articles, editorials, columns, and reviews, provide a broad diversity of perspectives and viewpoints. Free text searching and complete indexing make Ethnic NewsWatch easy to search.
  • Accessible Archives
    Includes several important newspaper collections, including:
    • The Pennsylvania Gazette (1728-1800) - "the New York Times of the 18th Century"
    • African American newspapers of the 19th century, including Freedom's Journal, The Colored American, The North Star, The National Era, Provincial Freeman, Frederick Douglass Paper, The Christian Recorder
    • Civil War newspaper coverage (November 1860 to April 1865) from The Charleston Mercury, The New York Herald, The Richmond Enquirer
    • The Pennsylvania Newspaper Record: Delaware County (1819-1870) - documents the industrialization of predominantly agrarian culture established by Quaker farmers

  • Early American Newspapers Digital (digitization in progress; will cover 1690-1876 when complete)
    Based largely on Clarence Brigham's History and Bibliography of American Newspapers, 1690-1820, this database, when complete, will feature cover-to-cover reproductions of hundreds of historic newspapers, providing more than one million pages as fully text-searchable facsimile images. For students and scholars of early America, this collection offers an unprecedented look back into the history of the United States -- her people, ideals, commerce and everyday life. In progress; content will continue to be added until digitization is complete.
  • Georgia Historic Newspapers
    Available via the Digital Library of Georgia. Contains issues of three important historic Georgia newspapers: the Cherokee Phoenix, the Dublin Post, and the Colored Tribune.
  • Civil War in America from the Illustrated London News (Currently covers 1861-1862; will eventually run through 1865)
    An in-house project in which U.S. Civil War news published in the Illustrated London News newspaper is being digitized. Provides a British view of this important event in American history.

  • Foreign Broadcast Information Service Electronic Index (1975-1996) [NOTE: Index only]
    World News Connection (1994 to present)
    The Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) database is an index to translated transcripts of foreign radio and television broadcasts, news agency transmissions, newspapers, periodicals, and government statements that were published in eight regional FBIS Daily Reports (Central Eurasia, East Asia, Near East and South Asia, China, East Europe, West Europe, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa). The full text of these transcripts are available on microfiche. The World News Connection database continues the FBIS reports and provides the full text transcripts online. See the Foreign Broadcast Information Service and World News Connection Guide for more details on access to and use of these two news translation services.
  • [London] Times Digital Archive (1785-1985)
    Provides searchable full-text access to the Times, iincluding searchable advertisements and photographs from 1785 through 1985. For more recent years of the Times, search Lexis-Nexis Academic. (This database does not include the Sunday Times, a newspaper independent of the Times.)
  • Civil War in America from the Illustrated London News (Currently covers 1861; will eventually run through 1865)
    An in-house project in which U.S. Civil War news published in the Illustrated London News newspaper is being digitized. Provides a British view of this important event in American history.

United States Newspaper Guides
  • Center for Research Libraries
    The Center for Research Libraries is a cooperative program that provides access to unique and unusual collections of library materials for its members. CRL collects newspapers from each state in the United States, from each country of the world, and specialized newspapers, such as those of the U.S. ethnic press. Emory faculty, students and staff may use ILLiad (our Interlibrary Loan system) to request materials from CRL. In addition to its general catalog cited above, CRL has two specialized catalogs for newspaper holdings. These are:
  • U. S. Newspaper Program
    "The United States Newspaper Program is a cooperative national effort among the states and the federal government to locate, catalog, and preserve on microfilm newspapers published in the United States from the eighteenth century to the present." The USNP Web page links users to the Web pages for each of the state projects (e.g., Georgia Newspaper Project) where the states' historical newspaper collections are described. In addition, links to the catalogs of eight major newspaper collections are given, including the Library of Congress, the American Antiquarian Society, the New York Public Library, and the Wisconsin Historical Society .
  • History and Bibliography of American Newspapers, 1690-1820
    Reference Z6951 .B75 1947
    By Clarence Saunders Brigham. Lists over 2000 newspapers published in this country, including dates of publication, title changes, editors, frequency, and other historical notes.
  • American Newspapers, 1821-1936; a Union List of Files Available in the United States and Canada
    Reference Z6945 .A5
    Lists newspapers available in libraries, county courthouses, newspaper collections, and other repositories as of the mid 1930's. Most useful today for identifying newspapers published at a particular time in a particular place.
  • American Journalism: A History of Newspapers in the United States through 250 Years, 1690 to 1940
    Reference PN4855 .M63 2000
    Reprint of classic history of American newspaper journalism by Frank L. Mott. Incorporates bibliographies with suggestions for further reading, and an index that includes names of journalists and newspapers.
  • Newspapers in Microform, 1948/1983

    Identifies and lists locations for microform holdings of newspapers published in the United States and other countries.
  • Newspaper Indexes : a Location and Subject Guide for Researchers

  • African-American Newspapers and Periodicals; a National Bibliography

    The most complete census of the newspapers and periodicals published and edited by African-Americans between 1827 and the present. Gives full bibliographic description and a location for each publication cited. Edited by James P. Danky and Maureen E. Hady.
  • Atlanta Newspapers - Guide to Indexes
    Provides information on availability and location of subject indexing for the Atlanta Constitution, Atlanta Journal, Atlanta Daily World, Atlanta Inquirer, Atlanta Weekly, and the Great Speckled Bird.
  • Gale Directory of Publications and Broadcast Media (title varies; previously called the Ayer Directory

    This source contains contact information and description of newspapers and other publications listed alphabetically by country.

    Divided into three volumes (UK , Europe, World), this annually published resource provides contact information, date established, content, readership, frequency, and circulation information for newspapers and other publications.

    The library has from 1955 to date with some gaps. Title varies somewhat. Lists French serial publications (newspapers and periodicals) existing as of a particular year. For current publications try Annuaire de la presse française (best for national and regional newspapers).
  • Benn's Media (title varies)
    Latest edition at: Reference Desk Z6941 .B45; see EUCLID for earlier editions back to 1846
    Divided into three volumes (UK , Europe, World), this annually published resource provides contact information, date established, content, readership, frequency, and circulation information for newspapers and other publications.
  • Catalogue of the Newspaper Library (British Library)

    This is the great catalog of British and Commonwealth newspapers. Arranged geographically and by title. The catalog is available online as the Newspaper Library Catalogue .

    Best for German publications but includes foreign titles also.

    Best for titles published in Great Britain, to a lesser extent good for Commonwealth and foreign titles. Emory's holdings of Willing's begin with 1954.
