Locating Materials at Emory & Elsewhere

To find materials located at any of Emory's libraries, search EUCLID, Emory's online library catalog.

The contents of books and articles are not searchable in EUCLID. Read Finding a Journal Article in the Woodruff Library.

When searching EUCLID by subject, we recommend that you use the Browse search mode. Browsing will retrieve a list of subject headings established by the Library of Congress.  A multi-volume set of Library of Congress (LC) subject headings is available at the Woodruff Library Reference desk.

A sample list of LC subject headings for French language and literature follows (capitalization is not necessary):

French Language
French Language Dictionaries

French Literature
French Literature [To 1500; 16th Century, etc.]
French Literature [Bibliography; Criticism and Interpretation; Translations into English, etc.]

When looking for French language materials published outside of France, search under related headings such as:

  • French-Canadian Literature [Drama, Fiction, Poetry, etc.]
  • French Guianese Literature
  • French Creole Literature
  • Algerian Literature (French)

Most materials in EUCLID which say "held by GENERAL" are located in the Woodruff Library. See the Woodruff Library Location Guide.

Arts and Humanities Citation Index. (1977 - 2000; now available electronically through ISI web of Science)
Reference Z5937 .A795
Indexes a large number of English and foreign language journals. Citation indexes are based on the theory that authors writing on a topic will cite in footnotes and bibliographies other authors who have written on the same topic. Since scholars usually use footnotes to find related articles on a subject, this type of index indexes the footnotes and uses them to identify these related articles.

There are three parts to AHCI: (1) the Citation Index, which lists, under the author's name, all articles, books, or other materials cited in footnotes or bibliographies in the journals indexed for a particular year; (2) the Source Index, which gives full bibliographic information for the citing articles referred to in the Citation Index; (3) and the Permuterm Subject Index that provides a subject approach to listings in the Source Index by means of title keywords. Web of Science, a database incorporating Arts and Humanities Citation Index, covers 1987 to present.

Databases and Electronic Journals

Access to most of the electronic resources listed below is limited to Emory University faculty, students, and staff. Information on Accessing Databases

To identify other databases and electronic journal collections that provide references or full text for journal articles, try our Database Locator service.

ARTFL
ARTFL stands for American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language. It is a database containing the text of some 2000 works of French literature, non-fiction prose and scientific writings. The largest number of texts are from the eighteenth through twentieth centuries but there are examples from the thirteenth through the sixteenth centuries as well. This database was compiled in the 1960's to provide lexicographers working on Trésor de la Langue Française with a corpus from which to draw examples of usage.

Catalogue de la Bibliothèque Nationale
The home page of the National Library of France will link you to a number of important catalogs: BN-OPALE PLUS is the catalog of 8 million book and periodical titles, recording books acquired since the library's beginning to 1969 and periodicals from the beginning to 1960. The introductory page gives details about what the catalog does and does not contain. To search for books and journals acquired after the above dates, search the companion catalog, BN-OPALE. It contains all French and foreign books accessed since 1970, all periodicals accessed since 1960, and anonymous works of the 16th-18th centuries.

Dissertation Abstracts/Digital Dissertations
1861 to present
Contains references to doctoral dissertations completed at over 800 North American colleges and universities since 1861. Dissertations from over 300 foreign universities are also listed in the database. Summaries are provided for dissertations completed since 1980. For dissertations done in 1997 and later, PDFs of some titles are available.

FRANCIS
1984 to present
FRANCIS succeeded the Bulletin signalétique series of indexes in 1991. In 1994, it became available only in the online version. It indexes some 3,000 scholarly journals in all fields but is particularly strong in religion, art history and literature. Indexed in both French and English.

Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts (LLBA)

MLA International Bibliography (Ovid)
MLA International Bibliography (GALILEO)

RLIN Bibliographic File
A union catalog of 75 million items held in comprehensive research libraries and special libraries in RLG member institutions, plus over 100 additional law, technical, and corporate libraries using the Research Libraries Information Network. Especially useful to scholars who are trying to locate manuscript collections.

Voltaire électronique
PQ2070 1998 CD-ROM STACKS
Based on the Voltaire Foundation's Oxford edition of the complete works of Voltaire and supplemented with additional texts.

Web of Science
1987 to present
A collection of multidisciplinary citation databases, including the electronic versions of ISI's print titles -- Social Sciences Citation Index, Science Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index. Citation indexes are based on the theory that authors writing on a topic will cite in footnotes and bibliographies other authors who have written on the same topic. Since scholars usually use footnotes to find related articles on a subject, this type of index indexes the footnotes and uses them to identify these related articles. Search for specific articles by subject, author, journal, and/or author address. Because the information stored about each article includes the article's cited reference list (i.e., its bibliography), you can also search for articles that cite a known author or work. The print version of Arts & Humanities Citation Index (Reference Z5937 .A795) is available from 1975 - 2000.

WorldCat
Provides access to one of the world's largest databases of bibliographic information--an online union catalog of over 28 million records, representing the combined holdings of over 11,000 libraries in the United States and abroad.
