Locating Materials at Emory

To find materials located at any of Emory's libraries, search EUCLID, Emory's online library catalog. Spend a moment to review the handy and concise search tips.

When searching EUCLID by subject, we recommend that you select Browse on the EUCLID main menu. Browsing will display an alphabetical list of subject headings based on the term you enter. Note particularly how browsing brings out the geographical or country aspect of subject matter, especially important in film research.  A multi-volume set of Library of Congress (LC) subject headings is available at the Woodruff Library Reference desk (Reference Desk LC26.7:20).

Most materials in EUCLID which say "held by GENERAL" are located in the Woodruff Library.

Here is a sample list of LC subject headings for film research (capitalization not necessary in EUCLID):

This is called Interlibrary Loan and you can initiate an ILL request from any EUCLID screen (third button from the right at top) or from the Interlibrary Loan System page.

Locating Reviews

Film reviews, as opposed to film criticism, usually appear shortly before and not more than a couple of weeks after the release of a film. Reviews characteristically give a plot summary, comment on the script and cinematography and rate the performances of the actors. They usually conclude with the reviewers opinion of the film and recommendation for viewing (or not). A key element in locating reviews is knowing the year a film was first screened. This can be found using many of the reference sources listed.

Locating Criticism

Film criticism may appear anytime after a film is released. In fact, critical works may appear over many years and many years after a film is first shown. Critical articles may discuss plot, writing, cinematography, acting and other topics but are likely to go into very much more detail than would film reviews. Film criticism may be evaluative but its purpose is to investigate, interpret, or develop a particular topic. Most of the titles listed in the section on Locating Film Reviews carry criticism, too, so they should not be ignored.
