Materials at Emory |

To find materials located at any of Emory's libraries, search
EUCLID, Emory's
online library catalog. Spend a moment to review the
handy and concise search tips.
When searching EUCLID by subject, we recommend that you
select Browse on the EUCLID
main menu. Browsing will display an alphabetical list of subject
headings based on the term you enter. Note particularly how
browsing brings out the geographical or country aspect of
subject matter, especially important in film research.
A multi-volume set of Library of Congress (LC) subject headings
is available at the Woodruff Library Reference desk (Reference
Desk LC26.7:20).
Most materials in EUCLID which say "held by GENERAL" are
located in the Woodruff Library.
Here is a sample list of LC subject headings for film
research (capitalization not necessary in EUCLID):

To locate books that other libraries own on your topic search
the RLIN
(Research Libraries Information Network) Bibliographic File
or WorldCat
Both
are online catalogs containing books held by many libraries
(150 libraries in RLIN, 14,000 in WorldCat). Search also the
Center for
Research Libraries Catalog for books and microfilm sets
and their
Foreign Newspapers Database for newspapers.
INTERLIBRARY LOAN
The library will borrow books for you from almost any library
in the country and can supply copies of articles from almost
any magazine, newspaper or journal. This is called Interlibrary
Loan and you can initiate an ILL request from any EUCLID screen
(third button from the right at top) or from the Interlibrary
Loan System page.
You can also borrow from books directly from certain area
libraries using either the GETS
Program or the ARCHE

Film reviews, as opposed to film criticism, usually appear
shortly before and not more than a couple of weeks after the
release of a film. Reviews characteristically give a plot
summary, comment on the script and cinematography and rate
the performances of the actors. They usually conclude with
the reviewers opinion of the film and recommendation for viewing
(or not). A key element in locating reviews is knowing the
year a film was first screened. This can be found using many
of the reference sources listed.

Film criticism may appear anytime after a film is released.
In fact, critical works may appear over many years and many
years after a film is first shown. Critical articles may discuss
plot, writing, cinematography, acting and other topics but
are likely to go into very much more detail than would film
reviews. Film criticism may be evaluative but its purpose
is to investigate, interpret, or develop a particular topic.
Most of the titles listed in the section on Locating
Film Reviews carry criticism, too, so they should not
be ignored.
See also the titles listed under Databases.

Biographies
The sources in this section take several forms. Some give
biographical information while some merely list credits. To
identify other such sources do a browse search on EUCLID

region. Search first in "General News Topics" specifying
national, regional or foreign sources. A search on "Biographical
Information" will pick up some news articles as well as
entries from selected "who's who" types of publications.

thereafter.
Reference PN1583 .V35

Reference PN1998 .A2T73 1983
Who's Who in Hollywood (1991)
Ref PN1998.2 .R34 1992

Vanderbilt
Television News Archive
Since 1968, the Television
News Archive at Vanderbilt University has been taping
the evening news and making copies available to interested
persons. Originally, only the ABC, NBC, and CBS evening news
broadcasts were taped. In 1988 "Nightline" was added and in
1989, the CNN evening news. The Archive has also taped broadcasts
on such special subjects as the Watergate hearings, political
party conventions, the Iran crisis and the Gulf War. The complete
archive can be searched by subject (topic or personal name)
using the index at the archive's web site. The site also gives
information about arranging loans of copies of the newscasts.
While the web index should be everyone's first choice when
approaching the archive, Emory has two other versions of the
index, Television News Index and Abstracts. The print
copy covers (1981-1995) AI3 .T44 and the microfilm
version covers (1968-1990) at Micfilm 1262.
