Locating Materials at Emory & Elsewhere

To find materials located at any of Emory's libraries, search EUCLID, Emory's online library catalog.

The contents of books and articles are not searchable in EUCLID. Read Finding Articles at the Woodruff Library.

When searching EUCLID by subject, we recommend that you select the Browse search mode. Browsing will retrieve a list of subject headings established by the Library of Congress.  A multi-volume set of Library of Congress (LC) subject headings is available at the Woodruff Library Reference desk.

A sample list of LC subject headings for Biology:

Aquatic Biology
Biological Diversity
Biology
Biology, Experimental
Botany
Ecology
Human Biology
Life Sciences
Microbiology
Molecular Biology
Population Biology

Most materials in EUCLID which say "held by GENERAL" are located in the Woodruff Library. See the Woodruff Library Location Guide.

Introduction

Primary publications are first-hand reports of original research and are published in one of several formats. Best known is the paper in a scientific journal. Upon completion of a research project or investigation, the methods, results, and conclusions of the research are submitted to a scientific journal for possible publication. The decision to publish is made on the basis of evaluation by "referees" to whom the journal editor assigns the paper.

Other forms of primary publications, often preceding the appearance in a journal, include research reports, dissertations, symposium publications, and preprints. Research reports or technical reports are unrefereed accounts with sometimes limited distribution. Some investigators report on their research at meetings and symposia; these reports may be published first as abstracts and later as papers in symposium volumes. Journal papers based on the presentations may appear years later.

Secondary publications include books, review articles, abstracts, and tabular compilations of numerical data. They summarize and interpret information published earlier in primary sources. The bibliographies in secondary sources can lead to primary sources.
