Getting Started

Some Library Basics

  • You can ask for help!
  • You must access library electronic resources via a library web site, such as EUCLID or the Database Locator. If you are at home, see off-campus access instructions.
  • Your EmoryCard is your library card.
  • Check-out period for books is 30 days for undergraduates, 112 days for graduates, and 1 year for faculty. Note that current periodicals, reference books, and some government documents do not circulate. Note also that some audiovisual materials are only available for use inside the Music and Media Library.
  • You may recall an item that has been checked out. Recalls require a person to return the item within 14 days. Recalls are instigated via EUCLID's Request feature.
  • You may ask for rush cataloging of any item that is listed as being "in-process". If an item you need is listed as "on order" or "none", please contact Laura.
  • Interlibrary Use cards allow you to borrow directly from any of the fourteen libraries in the Atlanta area. These cards are available at the Reference Desk on Level 2. Georgia State, Georgia Tech, and the University of Georgia allow you to borrow from their libraries with just your EmoryCard.
  • Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests must be submitted electronically via ILLiad. In most cases, there is no charge for borrowed items or for photocopies. ILL can be picked up at the Circulation Desk. Returns can be made to the ILL Office or the Circulation Desk.

Locating Materials in EUCLID

To find materials located at any of Emory's libraries, search EUCLID, Emory's online library catalog.

The contents of books and articles are not searchable in EUCLID. Please read Finding a Journal Article in the Woodruff Library to learn more.

When searching EUCLID by subject, we recommend that you select the Browse search mode. Browsing will retrieve a list of subject headings established by the Library of Congress. A multi-volume set of Library of Congress (LC) subject headings is available at the Woodruff Library Reference desk.

Most materials in EUCLID labeled "held by GENERAL" are located in the Woodruff Library. See the Woodruff Library Location Guide (available in print or on the Stacks Team's website). Materials in EUCLID labeled "MATHSCI" or "MATHSCIREF" are located in the Mathematics & Science Center Library, at 400 Dowman Drive.

The bulk of Mathematics books and bound volumes of journals will fall into the QA call number range, located on the fourth floor of the Woodruff Stacks Tower.

Identifying Books

The following lists are not exhaustive; they are simply selections of the books and resources available at the Emory Libraries. There are many other reference sources available on hand; and some titles have extra copies or slightly older editions in the stacks, which may be checked out from the library. One cannot overemphasize the importance of browsing the shelves! Oftentimes, this is an excellent means of finding the book you need.

Here are the general call number ranges for some types of mathematics sources:

Bibliographies: Z6651-Z6655
Biographies: QA28
Dictionaries: QA5
Encyclopedias: QA5
Style manuals: QA42, LB2639, T11

Databases, E-Journals, and Preprints

Databases

Listed below are a few of Emory's databases with mathematical content.

American Mathematical Society (AMS) Journals
JSTOR
(The Journal Storage Project)
MathSciNet
SIAM Journals Online
Web of Science (ISI Citation Indexes)
ZMATH (Zentralblatt MATH)

To find more databases, try the Database Locator. Choose a topic from the pulldown menu (when looking for Mathematics, use "Computer Science & Mathematics") and hit "Go".

If you have a particular journal in mind, use jake (short for Jointly Administered Knowledge Environment) to find databases that index or abstract that journal. Then use the Database Locator to check and see that we have access to that particular database (jake won't check it for you).

E-Journals

The Emory General Libraries subscribe to many electronic journals in addition to our print resources. These resources can be located through the eJournals@Emory University Libraries site and are also included in EUCLID. Generally, mostly titles under paid subscription are included in eJournals.

While free electronic journals are not necessarily included in the eJournals listings, there are still a number of excellent ones available. Some of these are cataloged in EUCLID. (Feel free to contact Laura if you have another one you'd like me to add!)

Here are some collections of open-access journals:

Preprints

Another freely available source of mathematical information, preprints are papers which have been submitted for publication but have not yet been published, or which are about to be presented at a conference.
