Anthropology Resources: An Introduction

Anthropology is a wide-ranging field with four subfields, including Cultural/Social Anthropology, Physical/Biological Anthropology, Linguistics and Archaeology. Anthropology also has many overlaps with a number of other disciplines, including biology, ecology, sociology, psychology, economics, political science, women's studies and various area studies. Therefore, in anthropology, in order to do comprehensive research, make sure to think about which other disciplines may touch on your topic.

Finding Books

Call numbers for anthropology

There is no easy way to browse through anthropology books on the Library shelves. General books on anthropology are in the call number range "GN". However, most anthropology books are scattered across the collection. For example, anthropological ethnographies written about cultures are classified with the books about the country/region of the culture (e.g. Africa in "DT"; Asia, "DS"; Latin America, "F") and books from the four fields of anthropology could be scattered in almost any call number depending on the subject. Therefore, to find books on an anthropological subject, it is best to search the library's catalog, EUCLID.

Searching EUCLID (the Emory Libraries' Catalog)

EUCLID is the key to Emory's library holdings. Search it to identify books, music, videos, and magazines/journals (but not articles) that all of Emory's libraries own.

TIPS: For best searching results, try using Boolean Operators (AND, OR, NOT). You may also increasingly find many electronic materials in EUCLID.

When searching EUCLID by subject, we recommend that you select the Browse search mode. Browsing will retrieve a list of subject headings established by the Library of Congress.
