Important information concerning tests

In order to write prescriptions, a person must be a liscensed physician. In order to obtain and administer published psychological tests (sometimes called commercial tests), one must be a licensed professional or in some cases, a graduate student. Other tests (non-published or non-commercial) may be obtained by undergraduate students and grad students. For more information about the proper use of tests and measurements, see the APA web site.

Finding a measurement instrument by topic (Example: I need to find a measure for stress and college students.)

Published Tests (Professionals and Graduate Students)

Tests in Print (TIP) (REF BF176 .T47)

TIP is a bibliography of commercially-available tests that are in print and available for purchase. It has several indexes, including subject, score and author. The Score Index is very useful and allows one to look up tests by variable. Examples of variables/scores include: Family Cohesion, Language Errors, Feelings About Parenthood, Memory Skills, and Scientific Attitude.

Mental Measurement Yearbook (MMY)(Paper and online)
(REF BF176 .M46)

Beginning with volume I in 1939, the MMY now contains 15 editions. Known as MMY 1, MMY 2, etc..., the online version includes only MMY 9 to the most recent edition. This source contains descriptions, critical reviews and references for hundreds of tests. The MMY has a subject Index and score Index.

Published and non-published tests (Professionals, graduate students, undergraduates)

TestLInk This "free" web site sponsored by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) contains descriptions of over 20,000 published and unpublished tests and measurements.

Tests in Microfiche Collection (TIM) - This collection is located on level one of the Woodruff library in the microfilm collection. Tests can be printed or scanned and converted to PDF files. The tests are located in Micfiche Drawer 1198. Print index is located in microguide reference: LB3051.C85

Health and PsychoSocial Instruments (HAPI) - This database is an index to journal articles, book chapters and tests. It allows two types of searches. Primary source and secondary source. Primary source allows a user to search information from the original source in which an instrument was published. The items you find may (or may not) contain a copy of the test.

Web sites
Be very cautious about using tests and measurement instruments you find "on the web". Remember, anyone can put up a web page claiming to be an expert. Your best bet is to look for Web sites sponsored by professional organizations or educational institutions. Below are inks to tests and measurement web sites maintained by reputable organizations.

Journal articles and reviews of measurement instruments

Mental Measurement Yearbook (MMY) (Paper and online)
(REF BF176 .M46) This source contains descriptions, critical reviews and references for hundreds of tests. The MMY has a subject index and score index. Beginning with volume I in 1939, the MMY now contains 15 editions. Known as MMY 1, MMY 2, etc. The online version includes only MMY 9 up to the latest edition.

PsycINFO - Online You can search for scholarly articles by test name to find research studies which used a specific test. PsycINFO covers the professional and academic literature in psychology and related disciplines. PsycINFO's coverage is worldwide, and includes references and abstracts to over 1300 journals in more than 20 languages, and to book chapters and books in the English language.

Obtaining the measurement instrument (Example: I need to locate the Beck Depression Inventory).

Published Tests

If you've found the title of a test in Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY), Tests in Print (TIP), or the ETS Test Collection, the name of the publisher is included in the test entry. The print sources (MMY and TIP) include sections (usually found at the back of each volume),that list publisher contact information. You can then contact the publisher by phone or web site and then follow the directions to order the test.

If you found a test using the TestLink (ETS) web site, the entry for the test should include the publisher's address. A small percentage of tests found in TestLink (ETS) can be purchased online in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. The Order a test link on the ETS web site explains these procedures.

Unpublished Tests

If the test is not listed in MMY, TIP or ETS, you have several choices:

Is the test in a book? (Use the bibliography created by Helen Hough at the University of Texas, Austin or HAPI)

Is the test available free on the web? (Google)

Is the test in a journal article? (HAPI)

Will the author send the test? (Google the authors name and university in which s/he is affiliated).
