  • BOOK REVIEWS

    Major Africana titles are covered in standard reviewing sources such as:

    Books In Print+Reviews

    Includes information on in-print, out-of-print, and forthcoming books as well as video and audio recordings from North American publishers. Also includes full-text reviews.

    CHOICE
    Provides reviews for books and electronic resources of academic interest. The electronic version goes back to 1988. A print version (Z1007.C4) goes back to 1964.

    For specialized reviews of books dealing with Africana only, there are several options. Most of the major journals dealing with Africa have a book review section. Many of these reviews are indexed in the standard Africana indexes. Electronic indexes and full text periodical sources (such as JSTOR) often allow you to limit your searches to book reviews. In addition there are the following:

Z465.7 A37 African Book Publishing Record provides selected reviews and lists of books published in Africa since 1975. Latest issues are kept in the Acquisitions Department.

H-Africa Reviews provides reviews back to 1995.

Africa's 100 Best Books
A list of "Africa's 100 Best Books of the 20th Century" was announced on February 18, 2002. The list includes children's literature, fiction and non-fiction. Only books written by Africans were eligible. Books were considered in Afrikaans, Arabic, English, French, Kikuyu, Portuguese, Sesotho, Shona, Swahili, IsiXhosa, Yoruba and IsiZulu. The project was organized by the Zimbabwe International Book Fair in collaboration with the African Publishers Network (APNET), the Pan-African Booksellers Association (PABA), African writers' associations, book development councils, and library associations.

 

Remember you can do a keyword search in EUCLID to locate books on your topic and then search on the subject headings of relevant titles.

    Multi-Library Catalogs

    • COPAC
      A merged catalog of 22 of the largest university research libraries in the United Kingdom and Ireland plus the British Library. Includes Oxford University (and Rhodes House Library) and Cambridge University.
    • WorldCat

    A comprehensive catalog of items held by a wide-range of libraries including research and public institutions. Searchable by author, title and subject. Covers other formats beyond books but does not index journal articles.

     

    Important Individual Library Catalogs

     

    African Studies Centre catalog in Leiden, Netherlands is a unique African studies database which contains titles of monographs, journal articles and chapters from edited works. Most entries include professional in-depth abstracts.

    British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom and its website contains extensive information about the library's rich Africana collection.

    Center for Research Libraries (CRL)
    CRL is large collection of over 5 million items of infrequently used researched materials. It is strong for foreign doctoral dissertations, newspapers, and microfilm collections supporting area studies. Many, but not all, collections can be located through the CRL catalog. Materials acquired by the Cooperative Africana Microform Project (CAMP) are housed at CRL. Emory is a member of CRL and CAMP and has extensive borrowing privileges to all the Center's collections. Materials are borrowed through Inter-Library Loan and can be kept for extended periods of time.

    Herskovits Library at Northwestern
    Established in 1954, the Herskovits Library is one of the largest separate Africana collections in the world, holding over 250,000 volumes, 2500 serials as well as an extensive collection of newspapers, maps and unique materials. The collection includes over 10,000 volumes in African languages. The holdings of the Library are accessible through NUcat, the University's online catalog. NUcat also includes the Africana Conference Paper Index, a searchable database to their large collection of conference procedures. Other large collections of Africana in the United States are found at Berkeley, Boston University, Univ. of Florida, Hoover Institution, Indiana University, Michigan State University, Stanford, UCLA, Wisconsin, and Yale.

    Library of Congress - Africa Section
    The Africa Section is the focal point of the Library's reference and bibliographic service for Sub-Saharan Africa. Africana holdings are integrated into the general collections and other special collections of the Library. For both historical and comtemporary research studies, the Library's collections are substantial, including sources in every major field of study in the social sciences and in the humanities. Holdings include invaluable primary source documents, facsimiles, and secondary sources.

    SOAS: School of Oriental and African Studies
    Houses over 1.2 million volumes with significant archival holdings and special collections for the study of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

    The reference collection of the Woodruff Library has a large collection of resources related to Africa. It is useful to browse this collection expecially in the call numbers Ref DT and Ref Z3500. Some titles of particular relevance are:

    A detailed annotated guide to major reference sources (print and electronic) on Sub-Saharan Africa, other than bibliographies. Covers approximately 3600 titles published since 1938 with citations and quotes from scholarly reviews when available.The first edition includes older materials, The author is the pre-eminent African Studies bibliogapher in the United Kingdom.

    Ref DT19.8 Z45 2006 African Studies Companion: A Resource Guide and Directory. 4th ed. Rev. Compiled by Hans Zell. London: Hans Zell Publishers, 2006.
    Provides an annotated list of the major reference print and online resources dealing with Africa, lists of journals related to the field, names and addresses of major collections and documentation centers, and lists of foundation and agencies supporting African studies research. This is an excellent first guide to African Studies.

    Excellent general research guide.

    Ref Z3501 D78 Guide to Research and Reference Works on Sub-Saharan Africa. Peter Duignan, editor. Stanford, CA: Hoover Institution Press, 1971-.
    Although dated, Duignan's guide still remains the most comprehensive guide to older (but many still unique or continuing) library and archival materials important to reference, research, and teaching of Sub-Saharan Africa. Contains over 3000 entries.

    Ref. Z3501.K15 2005 Reference Guide to Africa: A Bibliography of Sources. 2nd ed. Alfred Kagan
    Reference Guide is based on a graduate course, "Bibliography of Sub-Saharan Africa," taught for many years at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

    Z465.7 A37 "Africana Reference Works: An Annotated List," African Book Publishing Record.
    ABPR is a journal that keeps track of African publishing and, since 1986, it has also contained an annual annotated list of Africana reference books . Titles are recommended by a distinguished editorial committee and generally limited to English and European languages. Recent issues are kept in Collection Management/Acquisitions.

    Contains brief histories of individual African countries as well as biographical information of prominent deceased individuals, African and non-African, important in African history. Articles are signed.

    Ooffers lengthy essays and covers the entire continent.

                             Country Studies/Area Handbook Series
                             A U.S. government produced series of monographs on individual countries throughout the world. There is a volume                                          for most African nations. This series is well-written and contains extensive bibliographies. Electronic versions of                                              volumes published since 1988 are available. Paper copies of the full collection located in the Documents Collection

    U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Chiefs of State & Cabinet Members
    Also known as World Leaders, this site provides a list of the President, cabinet members, the Governor of the Central Bank, the country's Ambassador to the U.S., and its U.N. Representative for all countries from Angola to Zimbabwe. Paper and microfiche copies are available in documents.

    United States. Central Intelligence Agency. World Factbook
    Information on geography, people, government, economy, transportation, communication, defense for individual countries. Prepared by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. A paper copy is available in the Documents Collection, Pr Ex 3.15.

    U.S. Department of State. Background Notes on Africa
    Contains information on the geography, people, government, economy, history, government and political conditions, principal government officials, foreign relations, defense, and more for each country with which the US has diplomatic relations. Paper copies are also available in Documents Collection, S 1.123.

    World Bibliography Series (Reference collection. Check for individual call numbers).
    This series, which is available for many African countries, contains annotated lists of books and articles dealing with all elements of the nation.

    AfriTerra Library in Boston is one of the largest collections of rare African maps in North America. Many have been digitized.

    Geo e-Links Africa is a unique online information resource for maps related to sustainable rural development in Africa.

    Maps of Africa, Stanford University. Includes the Oscar I. Norwich collection of maps of Africa and Its islands, 1486- ca.1900.

             

               Perry Castanda Map Collection. African Maps. Digital maps from one of the most comprehensive collections                African maps  housed at  University of Texas.

         

              United Nations. Relief Web - Africa Maps includes a large selection of maps related to humanitarian disasters.

Other important African map collections are housed at Boston University, University of Illinois and University of California, Berkeley. Maps can generally be located by seaching the library catalog and restricting format to "maps." Some have specialized databases with map listings.

    The following sources have particular relevance for African Studies but African materials can be found in many other indexes as well. AfricaBib.Org
Africabib is a combination of databases providing access to periodical and other material on Africa. The two major databases include Africana Periodical Literature, a bibliography of over 36,000 citations from 300 periodicals, covering the entire range of topics relating to Africa. The other large database is African Women's Database which, in addition to including citations pertaining to women in Africa, includes conference papers, as well as references to theses and dissertations. A large and detailed bibliography entitled Women Travelers, Explorers and Missionaries to African 1763-2001 can be found on Africabib.

African Studies Abstracts/African Studies Centre Catalog
Produced by the African Studies Centre, Leiden, The Netherlands, each quarterly issue contains about 450 abstracts of collective volumes, journal articles and chapters from edited works, arranged geographically. Some 240 journals are regularly scanned. Almost half of these are published in Africa. Emphasis is on material in African studies (south of the Sahara) and third world development emphasizing social sciences and the humanities. About half of the entries are in English. Library has the earlier title, 1983-1994. African Studies Abstracts and its predecessor, Documentatie blad, are available in paper, Ref Z3501. L37. Now included in Africa-Wide: NiPAD and the general catalog of the African Studies Centre, Leiden.

Ref Z3501 C8 A Current Bibliography on African Affairs. African Bibliographic Center. Washington D.C: Greenwood Periodicals for the African Bibliographic Center, 1973-2002. Quarterly.
This three part work offers bibliographic essays, book reviews, original studies and a listing of newly published books, articles, government documents, and visual aids. Most citations are annotated. Includes about 2, 000 entries each year. Until vol. 30 (1999/2000) arrangement was primarily geographical, the current arrangement is by broad subject with a geographical index. Subject focus has also shifted to include more anthropology (including medical) and archaeology. Includes North Africa. Now published by Baywood Publishing.

    Africa Index: Selected Articles on Socio-Economic Development
    Online version (since 1996) of printed source (HC 800. A1U54) which publishes bibliographies on a wide range of topics. Produced by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

    African Journals Online offers table of contents and abstracts for 50 journals published in Africa in a variety of fields.

African Studies Centre (Leiden, The Netherlands)
Search their web catalog for citations from African Studies Abstracts as well as their general collections. Note that African Studies Abstracts is also included in Africa-Wide NiPAD .

AFRICANA CONFERENCE PAPER INDEX is a searchable database maintained by Herskovits Library of African Studies at Northwestern of their sizable collection of conference proceedings. The collection is largely in English or European languages. Click on "Special NU Databases" button in NUcat, the Northwestern University Library catalog to reach the database.

ANTHROPOLOGY PLUS is one of the most important research tools available in the fields of anthropology and archaeology. Anthropology Plus combines Anthopological Literature from Harvard University and Anthropological Index from the Royal Anthropological Institute, UK into a single database. Covers journal articles, reports, edited works and obituaries in anthropology and related fields. Coverage goes from late 19th century to the present.

This publication cites several thousand bibliographies issued as books, articles, parts of edited volumes, etc., relating to sub-Saharan Africa.

Updated version of the above title. Many find Scheven's work is an excellent starting point for research.

Columbia International Affairs Online is an important site for foreign policy information. It includes books, conference papers, reports etc. from a variety of public policy centers including the Carter Center

ELDIS contains full text articles on many African topics related to development and the environment.

ELECTRONIC JOURNAL OF AFRICANA BIBLIOGRAPHY
A refereed online journal of bibliographies on any aspect of Africa. Bibliographies must have at least 75 entries.

H-Africa
This is an academic discussion list that also includes a table of contents service for academic journals dealing with Africa.

HISTORICAL ABSTRACTS
Covers the history of the world from 1450 to the present (excluding the United States and Canada, which are covered in America: History and Life). Historical Abstracts includes information on articles indexed since 1970, and on books and dissertations from 1979. A print version is available (Z6205 .A534).

HUMAN RELATIONS AREA FILES COLLECTION OF ETHNOGRAPHY is a cross-cultural collection of full text information on all aspects of cultural and social life around the world. First issued on microfiche (mic. 848 ) and now available electronically as eHRAF, HRAF allows users to find information on individual cultures and to compare cultures. Over 50 African groups are represented. A list of cultures available in all formats is available.

INDEX ISLAMICUS
Indexes books and journals in European languages on Islam, the Middle East and the Muslim world.

This website has a number of useful features about national parliaments throughout the world including directory information and the Parlit Database which contains citations to articles, books, and reports dealing with national parliaments elections, and related topics.

JSTOR
This is an important source for the full text of back runs of (no current issues) for major journals including African Affairs and Journal of African History. You can also search the collection by author, subject, etc

LEXIS NEXIS ACADEMIC UNIVERSE
This database provides access to news, business, medical, educational and legal sources. The sources include international, national, and regional newspapers; magazines; trade journals; newsletters; wire service reports; and transcripts of television and radio news programs.

PAIS INTERNATIONAL
A selective list of the latest books, pamphlets, government publication, reports of public and private agencies, and periodical articles relating to business, economic and social conditions, public administration, and international relations, published throughout the world. POPULATION INDEX

PROJECT MUSE
Provides access to scholarly journals published by major university presses. Project MUSE covers the fields of literature and criticism, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, and many others. Includes Africa Today and Research in African Literature.

QUARTERLY INDEX OF AFRICAN PERIODICAL LITERATURE
An online version of the print index published by the U.S. Library of Congress' Nairobi Office. Indexes over 300 journals from 9 African countries. Paper copies and microficheare also available in Ref. 23503 Q38 and LC 1.30/ 8-4 in Documents Collections.

RESEARCH LIBRARY at Proquest
Formerly known as Periodical Abstracts. Covers publications from academic journals and popular magazines in the humanities, social sciences, general sciences, and business. Full text available starting in 1991.

SD ABSTRACTS
Contains abstracts of USAID funded research on Africa. Many of the full text reports can be located in Development Experience Clearinghouse.

WEB OF SCIENCE
A unique database that allows you to follow the WEB of footnotes from an original article to those which have cited it. Despite the title, the WEB covers social sciences, arts and the humanities in addition to science. The database can also be used to search for articles by subject, author, journal, and/or author address. This is an electronic successor to Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index, all from 1975 to the present. WORLD NEWS CONNECTION
WNC is an online news service that offers an extensive array of translated and English-language news and information. Compiled from thousands of non-U.S. media sources, including African, the information in WNC covers significant socioeconomic,political, scientific, technical, and environmental issues and events. Goes back to 1994 and succeeds the microfiche of the Foreign Broadcast Information Service housed in the Documents Collection on Level One of Woodruff Library. An electronic index to the microfiche collection of FBIS Daily Reports (1975-96), including the Daily Report for Sub-Saharan Africa, is also available.

    NOTE: African Research and Documentation (DT19.8 A35), the journal of the Standing Conference on Library Materials on Africa of the African Studies Association of the United Kingdom, regularly reports on archival collections. Issue 68 is devoted to describing photographic collections in the British Isles and is called "Images of Africa."

    History in Africa, A Journal of Method (DT19 H58), an annual publication of the U.S. African Studies Association, has occasional pieces on archival collections.

    AFRICA RESEARCH CENTRAL
    Is a searchable database that allows you to find primary source repositories in Africa, Europe and North America. The information included varies widely from basic contact information to connections to web sites and detailed description of holdings. Africa Research Central has as its goal "to centralize and constantly update information about institutions with African primary source collections."

    ARCHIVAL RESOURCES
    Pulls together over 600,000 collection records and nearly 27,000 collection guides from all over the world. The individual guides are searchable. The collection guides database was last updated on December 20, 2001.

    ARCHIVES HUB is a national gateway to descriptions of archives in universities and colleges in the UnitedKingdom. Includes over 80 institutions including the Bodleian Commonwealth and African Library, Cambridge University Library, John Rylands Library of Manchester University and the School of oriental and African Studies (SOAS).

    ARCHIVES USA
    Contains a directory of over 5,400 repositories and over 124,400 collections of primary source material across the United States. Allows researchers to read descriptions of a repository's holdings to determine whether a collection contains material useful to their work as well as find the information they need to contact the repository directly. Includes an updated version of the Directory of Archives and Manuscript Repositories in the U.S.; all records cited in the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections and full descriptions and indexing of over 42,000 manuscript collections which have been published in the National Inventory of Documentary Sources.

    EAN: EUROPEAN ARCHIVAL NETWORK
    EAN was created to be the primary site for searching all European archives.

    MUNDUS GATEWAY TO MISSIONARY COLLECTIONS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
    An important database that contains descriptions of more than 400 collections accumulated in Britain by individuals and societies engaged in the overseas missionary movement between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. The holdings of over 40 institutions in the United Kingdom are represented. A wide-variety of search tools are included.

    NATIONAL ARCHIVES, GREAT BRITAIN
    Covers the records of England, Wales, and the United Kingdom and provides links to the records of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Provides a gateway to the services and databases of the Public Record Office (PRO) and the Historical Manuscript Commission. The PRO is the National Archives of the United Kingdom and houses the records of the central government including the archives of the Colonial and Foreign Offices. The PRO's catalogue .(formerly PROCAT) provides access to over 9 million descriptions of documents groups. The Historical Manuscripts Commission provides information about the content and location of historical records in private hands. These include collections of individuals, families, businesses and organizations. The Commission maintains the National Register of Archives (NRA) which provides indexing to these privately held archival records and ARCHON, a directory of the collections covered. Consult the NRA FAQ for more information on what is available online and how to use the indexes.

    The National Archives website also contains a series of useful research guides in full text. Of special interest are How to Cite Documents in the National Archives and Researching British Colonies and Dominions. The website has important information on visiting the Public Record Office including planning your visit, applying for a reader' ticket (required for onsite research) and ordering documents before your arrival. It also maintains a list of independent researchers for hire.

    SOAS LIBRARY ARCHIVES AND MANUSCRIPTS
    In addition to describing local collections, this web site has links to a number of missionary and church archive collections as well as other archives in the UK.

    UNESCO ARCHIVES PORTAL
    This Web site intends to be the international gateway to information for archivists and archives users. It links to specific archives throughout the world, from the national to local levels as well as private/university archives. Also hosts the National Archives of Benin web site.

    UNITED STATES NATIONAL ARCHIVES
    Has "Diplomatic Records: a Select Catalog of National Archives Microfilm Publications". Within this catalog you can locate records by country or area.

Primary Source Material at Emory:

The Emory Libraries have rich collections of primary source material for African Studies. These include extensive missionary archives, papers of explorers, politicians/diplomats and government documents (see additional information on official documents below). These collections are listed in EUCLID but holdings in microfilm are easily located through a specialized gateway which also contains helpful annotations. Warning:  the gateway is currently limited to major microfilm sets and reflects holdings in Woodruff Library only. It does not always include the latest collections.

Beyond Emory:

CENTER FOR RESEARCH LIBRARIES (CRL)/COOPERATIVE MICROFORM PROJECT (CAMP)

CRL houses a wide variety of primary sources, including missionary materials, government publications, newspapers, etc. that are available for extended loans to Emory researchers. Their catalog is one of the first places to search for primary sources not held at Emory. CRL has a topic guide for African Studies which covers major collecions only. CRL publishes a Focus on Global Resources newsletter which has had several issues of interest: "Religion and the Modern World" (Summer 2007) and "England in Africa" (Spring 2007) . CAMP is an area studies program within CRL devoted to preserving unusual publications and primary resources related to Africa. Check the CAMP page, especially under "Collections," for important materials. CRL is currently purchasing microform copies of the German Colonial Archives which include documents regarding Namibia, Togo, Cameroon and Tanzania.
