Getting Started with your Research

To find materials located at any of Emory's libraries, search EUCLID, Emory's online library catalog.

The contents of books and articles are not searchable in EUCLID. Read Finding a Journal Article in the Woodruff Library.

When searching EUCLID by subject, use the Browse search mode. Browsing puts you in an alphabetical list based on your subject heading. The terms for the headings themselves are established by the Library of Congress.  A multi-volume set of Library of Congress (LC) subject headings is available at the Woodruff Library Reference desk.

Use the Browse mode also when looking up periodical titles. It saves a lot of time.

The library uses the following terms for geographical regions:

Latin America [Assigned to books dealing with all lands south of the Rio Grande: Mexico, Central America, South America and the West Indies]
Caribbean Area
Central America
South America
West Indies
[Names of countries]

For literary topics, use:

Latin American Literature [Assigned to books dealing with Spanish and/or Portuguese literatures of Latin America]
Spanish American Literature [or Poetry, Drama, Fiction, etc.][Assigned to books dealing with Spanish language literature of Latin America]
Cuban Poetry
Caribbean Literature (Spanish)
Art, Central American
Motion Pictures Argentina

Also, after names of regions or countries, you may use the following subheadings:

Biography
Civilization
Description and Travel [for guidebooks and travelers' accounts]
Economic Conditions
History
In Motion Pictures
Intellectual Life
Languages
Politics and Government
Social Conditions
Social Life and Customs
