Emory faculty, staff, and students have library privileges at all Emory Libraries. The Library Service Desk is on the second floor of the Woodruff Library. Two self checkout machines are available at the Library Service Desk for Emory faculty, staff, and students. It is available during regular library hours and when the desk is closed.
Emory alumni have lifetime borrowing privileges that require a yearly renewal. Please come to the Library Service Desk to set up a library account. Call 404-727-6873 or email us with any questions.
Families of Emory Faculty, Staff and Students
Apply for privileges at the Library Service Desk or contact us for more information. You must be present with your family member to set up initial privileges.
Woodruff Library welcomes all non-Emory visitors. Please sign in at the security desk with a picture ID for library access. See our library schedule for visitor hours.
Students and faculty with a valid university ID from:
- Georgia State
- Georgia Tech
- University of Georgia
can set up account at the Library Service Desk when your home library is open. Borrowing privileges are conditional on approval from your library.
Students and faculty from these schools need a current Interlibrary Use (ILU) card from their library to create a library account.
Users from both groups listed above may borrow a total of 25 items from the Woodruff Library, Pitts Theology Library, Music & Media Library (books and scores only - audio/visual media may not be borrowed), and the Chemistry Library.
Student from colleges and universities outside of Atlanta should email us for information about borrowing privileges.
Purchasing Borrowing Privileges
If you do not qualify for borrowing privileges, they can be purchased at the Library Service Desk. You must be 18 or older. The cost is $75 for six months or $100 for one year. You may borrow a total of 50 items from the Woodruff Library, Pitts Theology Library, Music & Media Library, and the Chemistry Library. Privileges are not transferrable. Unfortunately, group borrowing privileges are not available.
Become A Proxy
A proxy acts on another person’s behalf regarding library materials. Only Emory faculty, teaching graduate students, and persons with disabilities are eligible to register proxies.
To submit a proxy request, please complete the online Proxy Request Form. Please have ready the name and employee ID number of the faculty who needs a proxy, and the name and student ID number of the student who will be the proxy. This information can also be faxed to 404-727-1655. Please call us at 404-727-6873 if you have any questions.
Proxies can check out materials to your account and access details of your current checkouts. Proxies cannot access your Emory Personal ID or password, social security number, or contact information. Proxy privileges end August 31 of each year.

Please note: The above loan periods apply only to those materials housed in the stack tower of Woodruff Library . Please contact the other libraries (including the Music & Media Library) regarding their loan policies.
Also note that the above loan periods are for most library materials. Some items, such as bound journals, reserves items, or new books, have shortened loan periods. Please see My Account for due dates. Affiliate (Non-Emory) Borrowers may also check due dates using their account.
Emory faculty, students and staff may renew their items by going to My Account. Affiliate (Non-Emory) Borrowers may also login to their accounts online. Your account link is also located in the top right of the screen in our online catalog DiscoverE. Be advised, however, that online renewals are not available for overdue items, recalled items or for those items that have reached their renewal limit. If your account is blocked or due to expire soon, please email us.
Outside books drops are located on either side of the Woodruff Library entrance. Books may also be returned at the Library Service Desk or the outside book drop of any Emory library. DVDs and CDs should be returned to the Music & Media Circulation Desk and not placed in the book drop.
Please enquire at the Library Service Desk about paying fines. Only cash and checks are accepted. EmoryCard, credit cards, and debit cards are not accepted. Library bills for Emory students may also be paid at the Bursar’s Office.
Regular Materials: $0.50 per day
Recalled Books: $2.00 per day
Bound Journals: $2.00 per day
Reserve Items: $1.00 per hour
Please be aware that library accounts may be barred for failure to return recalled items by the recall due date. In addition, library accounts may become blocked due to an excessive number of overdue books or an excessive accumulation of bills on the account.
After the maximum amount of overdue notices are sent for a loaned item, it will be considered lost and replacement costs of $100 will be charged to the patron.

Please do not put damaged items in the book return. Bring them to the Library Service Desk.
