Borrowing Privileges

Emory Faculty, Staff, & Students

Emory faculty, staff, and students have borrowing privileges at all Emory Libraries.

Checkout periods

  • Faculty: 365 days
  • Graduate students: 120 days
  • Undergraduate students: 28 days
  • University staff: 28 days 

Alumni

Emory alumni have lifetime borrowing privileges that require a yearly renewal. Stop by the Woodruff Library Service Desk to set up an account.

  • Checkout period: 28 days
  • Borrow limit: 200

Family Members of Emory Faculty, Staff and Students

Children, spouses, and domestic partners of Emory Faculty, Staff, and Students are eligible for borrowing privileges. Accounts can be set up at the Woodruff Library Service desk.

Children of faculty and staff

  • Parents must be currently employed by Emory and in good standing with the library
  • Parent must provide Emory ID when setting up the account.  
  • Checkout period: 28 days

Spouses and domestic partners of faculty, staff, and students

  • Spouse or partner must be present when setting up an account.  
  • Checkout periods
    • Faculty spouse: 365 days
    • Student spouse: 28 days

Visitors

Woodruff Library welcomes all non-Emory visitors. Please sign in at the security desk with a picture ID. See our library schedule for visitor hours.

Georgia State, Georgia Tech, and the University of Georgia

Current students and faculty with a valid university ID from these institutions are eligible for borrowing privileges. Borrowing privileges are conditional upon approval from your library.

ARCHE Institutions

Students and faculty from schools part of the Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education need a current Interlibrary Use (ILU) card from their library to set up an account.

  • Checkout period: 28 days
  • Borrow limit: 25
  • Libraries:  Woodruff Library Pitts Theology Library, Music & Media Library (books and scores only), & the Chemistry Library

Purchasing an account

Borrowing privileges may be purchased at $75 for six months or $100 for one year.  Privileges are not transferrable.

  • Checkout period: 28 days
  • Borrow limit: 50
  • Libraries:  Woodruff Library Pitts Theology Library, Music & Media Library (books and scores only), & the Chemistry Library
  • Current photo ID is required
 
*Please note that the above checkout periods are for most library materials. Some items, such as bound journals, reserves items, or new books may have shortened loan periods.

Proxy Privileges

A proxy acts on another person’s behalf regarding library materials. Only Emory faculty, teaching graduate students, and persons with disabilities are eligible to register proxies.

Proxies cannot access your Emory Personal ID or password or contact information. Proxy privileges end August 31 of each year.

To submit a proxy request, please complete the online Proxy Request Form.  Please have ready the name and employee ID number of the faculty who needs a proxy and the name and student ID number of the student who will be the proxy.  If you have any questions, contact the Woodruff Library Service Desk

Renewing books

Books can be renewed via links located in the top right of discoverE's homepage.  Emory faculty, students and staff may renew their items via the Emory Login in discoverE.  All other borrowers may login via the Affiliate Login.  

Online renewals are not available for overdue items, recalled items or for those items that have reached their renewal limit.

If your account is blocked or due to expire soon, please contact the Woodruff Library Service Desk.

Returning books

Outside books drops are located on either side of the Woodruff Library entrance. Books may also be returned at the Library Service Desk or any Emory library.

*DVDs and CDs should be returned to the Music & Media Circulation Desk and not placed in the book drop.

Fines

Library fines may be paid by cash or check at the Woodruff Library Service Desk.  Students can also pay library fines through their student financial account.

  • Regular Materials: $0.50 per day
  • Recalled Books: $2.00 per day
  • Bound Journals: $.50 per day
  • Reserve Items: $1.00 per hour

Please be aware that library accounts may be blocked for failure to return recalled items by the recall due date, excessive overdue items, or accumulation of bills.

Lost Books

Books are considered lost after the maximum amount of overdue notices are sent for an item.  An $100 fee is charged for a lost book.

Damaged Books

If a book has been damaged, please return it directly to the Woodruff Library Service Desk.
